Orange In The NFL
Following the completion of the National Football League (NFL) regular season last weekend, four Syracuse football alums have the opportunity to continue their seasons as the 2012 NFL Playoffs begin on Saturday. Arthur Jones and Jameel McClain of the Baltimore Ravens, Doug Hogue from Detroit and Derrell Smith from Houston will all have the chance to compete for a spot in Super Bowl XLVI (Feb. 5, 6:30 p.m.) and the Lombardi Trophy.
McClain and Jones helped the Ravens (12-4) earn the second seed in the AFC and a first-round bye. Baltimore will host a divisional game on Sunday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. McClain started all 16 games for the Ravens during the regular season, finishing second on the team with 74 tackles (46 solo). Jones, who played in 14 games, collected 17 tackles, including 11 solo efforts during the regular season.
Hogue is in the midst of his first professional season, and played in 13 games with the Lions (10-6) during the regular season, primarily on special teams. Hogue was a fifth round draft choice (157th overall) in last year's NFL Draft. He was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection with the Orange in 2010, and was selected to play in the 2011 East-West Shrine All-Star game. Detroit, which made the playoffs for the first time since 1999, locked up the final seed in the NFC, and will travel to New Orleans for an 8:00 p.m. matchup on Saturday.
Smith was signed to the Houston practice squad on September 2 as the Texans went 10-6 during the regular season. Houston, the No. 3 seed in the AFC, will host Cincinnati on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
