Bleacher Report Complete List
The 1960 Cotton Bowl, which featured a dominating performance from Ernie Davis in a 23-14 win against Texas, is ranked No. 13 by the Bleacher Report in its 50 Greatest College Football National Championship Games of All Time.
Davis, who became the first-ever African-American to win the Heisman Trophy in 1961, accounted for three touchdowns in the win against the Longhorns. After scoring a rushing touchdown earlier in the contest, Davis was on the receiving end of an 87-yard touchdown connection. Later in the game, Davis would intercept a Texas pass and return it to the endzone for the score. For his efforts, Davis was named as the Cotton Bowl's Outstanding Back.
The win capped off a perfect 11-0 season for the Orange en route to the first bowl win in program history. Syracuse enjoyed its finest time on the gridiron that season, dominating on both the offensive and defensive sides of the football. The defense allowed just 193 rushing yards in 10 games, and the offense averaged 451 yards per game. Guard Roger Davis, end Fred Mautino and tackle Robert Yates earned All-America honors, and Davis was the seventh overall selection by the Chicago Bears in the 1960 NFL Draft.
