SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Freshmen Gillian Pinder and Emma Russell scored two goals each to lead No. 3 Syracuse field hockey (15-1) to a 4-2 victory over No. 16 Boston College (9-8) on Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium, running the Orange's home winning streak to 35 games.
Pinder had a career day, assisting on both of Russell's goals to give the freshman a career-high six points on the day as she factored in all of the Orange's goals. Her six-point game is Syracuse's first since Kelsey Millman in the season opener at Monmouth on Aug. 24.
The victory was the Orange's 35th in a row at Coyne Stadium, dating back to 2009.
Leann Stiver made six saves in goal for the Orange as the home team outshot the Eagles, 20-11, and penalty corners were even, 6-6.
Pinder started the scoring just 2:31 into the game when she took a pass from Lauren Brooks in the left side of the circle and scored far side with a reverse-stick shot. The assist was Brooks' fourth of the year.
In the 24th minute, Russell and Pinder came into the circle on a 2-on-1 break and Russell took the feed from Pinder to make it a 2-0 game, a score that would carry into halftime.
Russell struck again just 1:24 into the second half, taking a long lead pass up the left side of the field from Pinder and placed a shot perfectly inside the near-side post for her ninth goal of the season, making it 3-0.
The Eagles got on the board in the 40th minute with a Kelcie Hromisin goal in traffic in front of the cage following the rebound of a penalty corner shot, and Jordyn Hamilton pulled BC within a goal in the 46th minute when she took a long pass from outside the circle right in front of the SU goal and scored to make it 3-2.
Pinder provided the Orange with insurance in the 53rd minute when she tipped in a pass inside the left post off the assist from Alyssa Manley on a penalty corner for her seventh goal of the season and Manley's third assist.
BC pulled its goalie and played with a kicking back for the final 9:53, but the Orange defense withstood the Eagles attacks to keep the score 4-2.
The third-ranked Orange (15-1, 5-0 BIG EAST) concludes the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27 when it hosts No. 4 Connecticut (16-1, 5-0 BIG EAST) on Senior Day at Coyne Stadium. The teams will play for the BIG EAST regular season title at 1 p.m.
