After capturing its second BIG EAST win of the season on Friday night against UConn, the Orange (3-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) now turn its attention to Saturday's conference game at USF. The 40-10 win against the Huskies gave the Orange a great start to the beginning of the second half of the season.
"It felt great," said senior defensive tackle Deon Goggins. "It was a good win. Everybody was really excited. We finally beat a team like we know we can and that's to shut them out on defense and get up on them and score points. It was a great feeling. It was a great win. We came together. The week before, since we knew it was going to be a short week, we went out there and focused on practicing."
Goggins has tallied 25 tackles, including nine solo, five for a loss of eight yards and one sack for a loss of one yard, so far this season. He is in his second season of starting at defensive tackles. Against Rutgers, Goggins tallied a career-high 11 tackles.
"Doing well motivates us even more because now you have a lot of young guys on special teams and they see that everything is clicking," Goggins said. "They see that everything is going well with all the teams and they are doing what they are supposed to do and that will help the team as a whole play better. I think there is motivation with all the guys on the team to go out there and practice and even get better at it than what we did this past game so we can finish the rest of BIG EAST play."
Against UConn, the Orange defense held the Huskies to -6 rushing yards. In the last three games, they have only allowed their opponents to record a total of 106 rushing yards.
"We just go out there and play and take pride, as a D-line as a whole to stop the run first so we can earn the right to pass and get that action going a little bit more," Goggins said. "We love to pass."
Success on the defense can be attributed to the team's teamwork mentality.
"It was good to do our jobs for our guys like Durell Eskridge to get back there and make big hits," Goggins said. "It's great to get guys like Dyshawn Davis to get back there and make big hits and make big plays. We love to work together. When we all do what we are supposed to do, everybody will make the plays that they are supposed to make."
The Orange has back-to-back road games at South Florida (Oct. 27) followed by the game at Cincinnati (Nov. 3) before returning to the Carrier Dome for a Homecoming contest against Louisville on November 10. Tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
