Orange Falls Short at UConn, 4-2

The Syracuse ice hockey team lost at Connecticut, 4-2, this evening. In the Orange's (3-4-0, 2-0-0 CHA) first road loss of the season, both sophomore forward Shiann Darkangelo and senior defenseman Jacquie Greco scored. Junior Kallie Billadeau was in net for the Orange and recorded 19 saves against the Huskies.

"We generated a lot of shots in the second and third periods after falling behind 2-0," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "We couldn't find the go ahead goal. We made some costly mistakes defensively and have to do a much better job in our defensive zone tomorrow afternoon."
The Huskies (2-5-1) took a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period off of a goal from Kelly Horan. It only took 37 seconds into the second period for UConn to jump to a 2-0 lead. Stephianie Raithby was credited with the goal.

Syracuse then scored two back-to-back goals in the second period to even the score at 2-2. Greco notched her first goal of the season at 5:34 into the period. Darkangelo then scored her fourth goal of the season three and a half minutes later, with assists from Melissa Piacentini and Nicole Renault.

UConn took back the lead 11 minutes into the third period after Michaela Cava scored her fifth goal of the season. Rachel Farrel secured the Huskies' second victory of the season with an empty-net goal at 18:47. It was the first empty-netter that the Orange allowed this season.

This was also the first game this season the SU did not have a power play opportunity. The Orange penalty killing unit held UConn to 0-for-2 on their two chances. Syracuse also outshot Connecticut, 40-23. This is the third time this season that SU has taken 40 or more shots in a game.

The two teams face off again tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 27th, at 3 p.m.
