SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Outside hitter Silvi Uattara led the Orange to the first BIG EAST victory of the season with a team-high 25 kills against USF on Friday afternoon in the Women's Building. SU defeated the Bulls 3-2 (25-19, 17-25, 15-25, 25-23, 16-14) in a hard fought five set match.
"The win today gives us a chance to offset last weekend and get back to .500 in the conference," head coach Leonid Yelin said.
Syracuse opened the first set with a 25-19 win, showing offensive momentum as they held the Bulls to nine kills. USF managed to put a stop to the Orange offense in the second and third sets as the Bulls held the Orange to just nine kills in set three to put them at a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth set.
Kayla Walton and Erin Fairs both led the USF offense, while Caitlyn Breen led and Kayla Walton led at the net with eight blocks apiece.
Rebounding, SU picked up their offensive attack as the Orange called a timeout trailing 23-24 after an attacking error on Andrea Fisher gave USF the serve. A kill from Uattara was all the Orange needed though, as they took the match 25-23 following the Syracuse timeout. SU was helped by 12 USF attacking errors in the fourth set, as they held the Bulls to a -.100 hitting clip.
Andrea Fisher, Samantha Hinz, Monika Salkute and Gosia Wlaszczuk all led the Orange at the net with one solo block, while Hinz led the team with six total blocks. Emily Betteridge dished out 41 assists, while Nicolette Serratore recorded 13 digs in the libero position for the Orange.
USF opened the fifth set on a 5-0 unanswered run, until another kill by Uattara put the Orange on the board. The Orange and the Bulls continued to fight back and forth, until an attacking error on Kayla Walton tied to score at 14-14. Another kill from Uattara and a service ace from Serratore set the score at 16-14, sealing a close 3-2 victory for the Orange.
Syracuse will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 7 as they take on Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. in the Women's Building.
