Integrity, commitment, excellence and teamwork are the core values instilled in the Syracuse football program. Taking a look at life and impact of the late Timothy G. Byrne had on Syracuse, his family and the community, it is evident that the former Syracuse football player embodies all of those characteristics. Byrne tragically died in the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. He is the 2012 Zunic Award recipient, presented by the Syracuse Football Club.
The Syracuse Football Club will present the Zunic Award to Byrne's family at this year's Zunic Award Dinner. The dinner will be held on Friday, Nov. 9, at the Ramada Syracuse. The cost is $25 per person, which includes a dinner buffet. Click here for more information. Byrne will also be honored prior to the Syracuse vs. Louisville football game on Saturday, Nov. 10th at the Carrier Dome. Tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
Byrne was born in January 1965 in Oyster Bay, New York. The third oldest of 10 children in a large Irish Catholic family, Byrne excelled both academics and sports. He chose to continue his education and athletics at Syracuse University after graduation in 1983. He chose to try out for the Syracuse football team. His effort earned him a spot as a walk-on (non-scholarship) student-athlete. While his name can't be found on a stat sheet or a letterwinner list, Byrne made an incredible impact on every one with whom he came in contact.
Unfortunately, Byrne's career on the Syracuse football team was cut short his senior year. After learning that his father had passed away in 1986, Byrne took it upon himself to support his mother and nine other siblings as a 21-year old. Putting his family's needs before his is just one of many great examples of Byrne's integrity.
Byrne's excellence shined through after he graduated for Syracuse University in 1987 and landed a job as a bond trader with Sandler O'Neil. Byrne also earned an MBA at St. John's in 1991. He was 36 when he passed away in the attacks on the World Trade Center. His family and friends pay tribute to his teamwork every summer with a golf outing in the Poconos.

They perished in the crash while the people in the area of the plane where they were originally seated survived.
