Coach Doug Marrone has the Orange (5-5, 4-2) focused on its final nonconference game, a road game against the SEC's Missouri Tigers (5-5, 2-5). Both teams are seeking to become bowl eligible with a sixth win on Saturday. Click here to see Marrone preview the Orange's upcoming game at Missouri on Orange All-Access.
"It will be an unbelievable environment to play in", Marrone said. "Against a team that, they're 5-5, but they've had some tough breaks and the five teams they lost to are pretty much the top twenty teams in the country, when you look at Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. I think we know what we're getting ourselves into, and it's going to be a very difficult game for us."
This Saturday marks Marrone's first games versus an SEC foe. SU is 11-10-1 all-time against current SEC teams.
The Tigers are a perfect 3-0 in nonconference games and have won 18 straight nonconference games at home. SU is 2-0 all-time against Missouri, defeating the Tigers most recently 24-13 at Faurot Field in 1987, as the Orange was on its way to an unbeaten season (11-0-1).
"We have to play extremely well," Marrone said. "We have to go out there and not make a lot of mistakes that have hurt us in the past," We have to go in there and execute at a high level. Those are the things we need to maintain and get better at when we go to work this week."
SU has won three of its last four games and are looking to be bowl eligible for the second time in three seasons. This past Saturday, in the 45-26 win against the No. 11/10 Louisville Cardinals on Senior Day at the Carrier Dome, Ryan Nassib completed 15 passes setting the new BIG EAST record for career completions (738). He is only one touchdown pass shy of ranking third for the most career touchdowns in BIG EAST history.
"You just see him getting better and better and I said it a couple weeks ago, he was throwing the deep ball better than I've ever seen him, Marrone said. "That's a credit to Ryan (Nassib) and what he's done and kept working. The receivers have been doing a really nice job. They're getting open. They're making some nice plays on the perimeter. The run game is going a little bit, so it's a little bit more balance that we have in our attack. I'm proud of the direction that we're going."
The Orange takes on the Missouri Tigers on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. (ESPNU) SU then rounds out BIG EAST play at Temple on Friday, Nov. 23rd (11 a.m.; ESPN2).
