Leadership has been a key component in the Syracuse football team's success this season. Not only has it broken numerous records, the Orange turned its season around after beginning with a 2-4 record and then went 5-1 to become bowl eligible for the second time in three years. The 4-1 run included a 45-26 win against No. 11/10 Louisville and a thrilling 31-27 victory at Missouri.
"I would be a liar is I say I didn't see it every day with our football team," said head coach Doug Marrone. "It was more so than ever when we were sitting there at 2-4. You have to rely on something. I think those experiences that we had with the football program out with the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum really held this team together and have been a foundation for us to build on and push forward."
Without leadership, most of Syracuse's record-breaking season would have been possible.
"The leadership of this team and the way that they are playing overall together in all three phases is something that obviously is important and has really been the key to our success," Marrone said.
Syracuse's 2012 offense is having a record-setting season. So far this season, the Orange broke the SU total offense yards record (5,206), total plays (862), passing yards (3,404), completions (267), pass attempts (421) and first downs (276). Senior quarterback Ryan Nassib holds every major career and single-season passing record in SU history, including most attempts (1,261), completions (764), yards (8,845) and touchdowns (66). He also has 3,518 yards of total offense in 2012, another Orange season record.
"They've done a nice job," said Marrone. "I think Ryan's game has really accelerated. I think the people around him have picked up also. It's good to see that. If we can do that for four quarters, it's exciting and that's what our goal is."
The Orange wraps up the regular season at Temple on Friday, Nov. 23rd (11 a.m.; ESPN2).
"Number one for us is making sure we're healthy," Marrone said. "I can't emphasize that enough. Then, strategically, it's not a different formula. We have to not turn the ball over. We have to be balanced on offense and execute at a high level. On defense we have to make sure we tackle and not give up big plays. I don't think that's changed. Our players have been doing a better job with that. We have that same challenge on Friday."
