Five players scored in double-digits for the #6/6 Orange (3-0) in a 73-53 victory against Princeton (1-3) on Wednesday evening in the Carrier Dome. The victory was Syracuse's 24th straight at the Dome and the 44th consecutive regular-season triumph over a non-conference foe.
"I thought defensively we played very well. Princeton is a difficult team to play," said head coach Jim Boeheim. "We weren't as sharp offensively, as sharp as we'd like to be but James (Southerland) bailed us out early and made a couple of big shots in the first half to get us some distance," Boehiem said.
Senior James Southerland had a career-day against the Tigers, leading the Orange offense with a career-high 22 points, shooting 4-of-6 on three-pointers, and adding a career-high five steals.
Sophomore C.J. Fair tallied 12 points and six rebounds while senior Brandon Triche and sophomores Rakeem Christmas and Michael Carter-Williams all added ten points apiece. Christmas' scoring was a career-high effort for the forward.
Carter-Williams led the team with nine assists and a team-high six rebounds, helping SU to a 31-23 rebounding advantage over the Princeton. Fair and freshman DaJuan Coleman both added six rebounds each.
Syracuse limited the Tigers to .447 percent from the field (17-of-38) and .444 percent (8-of-18) in three-point shooting, while the SU defense forced 24 turnovers, leading to a 25-13 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Orange opened up the game on a 6-0 run, led by Christmas, who had four points during the scoring streak. Syracuse continued to pull away with the lead, ahead by as much as 12 points after a pair of three pointers from Southerland and Carter-Williams set the score at 20-8.
From there, the Orange played with a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, heading into the intermission with a 36-25 advantage over the Tigers.
Princeton used a 5-0 scoring run in the second half to get within six points of the SU lead at 45-39. The Orange quickly responded with an 8-0 unanswered run to set the score at 53-39, regaining a steady 14-point lead. Finding momentum, Syracuse cruised to a 73-53 victory against the Tigers, never letting the lead dip below the double-digit mark.
