Former Syracuse tackle Robert Yates has been honored as a member of the inaugural class of the Vermont Sports Hall of Fame. Yates, a member of the 1959 National Championship team, was named All-America that season as well.

Yates and the offensive line helped pave the way for the Orange to gain the most rushing yards in school history, most average rushing yards per attempt, and until 1997, the most offensive touchdowns by any SU team. He also handled some kicking duties. He was a letterwinner from 1958-59.

After leaving the Orange, Yates went on to play six seasons in the NFL with the Boston Patriots. He played in the franchise's first title game, the 1963 AFL Championship Game. A native of Montpelier, Bob was an all-state player for Montpelier High School.

Yates and the other 12 inductees will be honored during the 2012 Vermont Sports Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and Celebration on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012. For more information, visit vermontsportshall.com.
