Three Syracuse football student-athletes earned 2012 Capital One Academic All-District honors for their performance in the classroom, in the community and on the field. Graduate student Ryan Nassib (Malvern, Pa.) was recognized for the second time in his Syracuse career, while junior Macky MacPherson (Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore Sam Rodgers (State College, Pa.) earned the award for the first time in their career. All three will be on the national Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
A three-year starter at quarterback, Nassib, who was also honored in 2010, is a candidate for the National Football Foundation's William V. Campbell Trophy, after being named one of 15 NFF National Scholar-Athletes. Nassib graduated in May from the Martin J. Whitman School of Management in May with a dual undergraduate degree in finance and managerial accounting and is currently pursuing his Master's degree in accounting. A four-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree, Nassib has been on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the Whitman School of Management Dean's List every year. For the past two summers he has interned at a local investment firm. On the field, Nassib is establishing himself as one of the best quarterbacks in Syracuse history. He holds the Syracuse single-season record with 2,773 passing yards and is 33 completions shy of his own single-season record in that category with three games remaining in the regular season. His 308.1 passing yards per game is also a Syracuse record. On the Syracuse career lists, Nassib owns the completions record with 723 and is 252 yards short of the passing yards mark. He set SU individual game records for completions (44), passing yards (470), touchdown passes (5).
MacPherson, a geography major who is in his second year as a starter, was named to the 2011 BIG EAST All-Academic Team, has been on the Dean's List every semester and is a three-time Athletic Director's Honor Roll member. During the summer of 2011 MacPherson interned at AmeriCU Credit Union and in 2012 he worked as a merchandiser with PepsiCo. MacPherson often visits area schools to mentor students and promote reading, volunteers at local Rescue Mission food pantry and assisted with renovations of homes at North-side CYO for refugees and their families
Rodgers, who has been SU's starting long snapper for the past two seasons, earned 2011 BIG EAST All-Academic Team, 2011 Athletic Director's Honor Roll and 2011-12 Dean's List recognition. He is a National Society of Collegiate Scholars nominee and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Rodgers has been a guest speaker on nutrition at local middle school and a long snapping instructor for junior high students.
The 2012 Orange hosts Louisville on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Carrier Dome (12:00 p.m., ABC). All fans are encouraged to arrive early to the Dome to celebrate the senior class of 2012 prior to kickoff (ceremony will begin at 11:40 am). Tickets are available online, in person at the Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
In an effort to say 'Thank You' to our soldiers and their families, Syracuse University Athletics is partnering with Orange football fans to 'Salute A Soldier.' Due to the overwhelming response from fans, every member of the military is eligible for two tickets to the game. As a result of this program, tickets have already been distributed to Fort Drum, the 174th Fighter Wing and other local military units. Groups purchasing tickets receive additional benefits at various levels, including autographed posters and footballs, and pre-game field passes. Local organizations or groups of fans are encouraged to participate at any level by calling the Carrier Dome Box Office or the Syracuse Group Sales Department (1-888-DOMETIX).
In addition, Saturday is Dome Donation Day. The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area is partnering with SU and CXtec/TERACAI to support local families and victims of Hurricane Sandy with food and money drives. Fans in attendance can bring non-perishable food items or donate cash contributions to put in Red Kettles and Food Barrels that will be set up around the Carrier Dome, on the SU Quad, and at The Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel. CXtec, TERACAI, SU's Mary Ann Shaw Center and Smith Road Elementary School will be providing volunteer bell ringers.
The Syracuse Football Club will present the Zunic Award to former football student-athlete Tim Byrne, who tragically passed away in the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
