The Orange will be well represented this Tuesday, Dec. 4th, at the 55th NFF Annual Awards Dinner in New York City at the Waldorf=Astoria. Former Syracuse great, Art Monk, will be inducted into the 2012 NFF College Football Hall of Fame, while senior quarterback Ryan Nassib will be honored as an NFF National Scholar-Athlete. One of the top college football players in the country in his era, Art Monk became the mark of consistency during his remarkable career with the Orange, earning All-America honors in 1979. Monk played running back and wide receiver for Syracuse from 1976-79.
As a senior, Monk hauled in 40 receptions for 716 yards (17.9 yards per catch) with three touchdowns. He set a school record in 1977 for most receptions and receiving yards by a sophomore, catching 41 passes for 590 yards and four scores. With 1,644 career receiving yards in 35 games, Monk set a school record with a 47-receiving yards per game average. He recorded the greatest game by a receiver in Orange history on Nov. 5, 1977 against Navy, catching 14 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns.
A versatile playmaker who entered college as a running back, he posted 31 kickoff returns for 675 yards and 44 punt returns for 430 yards. Monk ranks sixth in school history with 3,899 career all-purpose yards. The last player to lead Syracuse in receiving for three consecutive seasons, Monk led Syracuse to its first bowl victory in 13 years with a 31-7 win over McNeese State in the 1979 Independence Bowl.
Nassib is one of 15 members of the 2012 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class who were chosen from a nationwide pool from all divisions of college football. As a NFF National Scholar-Athlete, Nassib is now a candidate for the William V. Campbell Trophy, presented to the absolute best scholar-athlete in college football. Each of the NFF Scholar-Athletes receives a scholarship to assist with tuition for graduate school.
For someone who has etched his name in multiple places in the SU football record book, it is an outstanding feat that Nassib has excelled in the class room, as well. Nassib graduated in May from the Martin J. Whitman School of Management in May with a dual undergraduate degree in finance and managerial accounting and is currently pursuing his Master's degree in accounting. A 2010 ESPN Academic All-District Team selection, Nassib is also a four-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree and has been on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the Whitman School of Management Dean's List every year.
Nassib ranks in the top 15 in the country in passing yards, completions and total offense per game. His Syracuse-record 3,619 passing yards is 10th in the nation. He holds every single-season and career passing record (except career TD passes) in Syracuse history, including most completions and yards. He also has 3,748 yards of total offense in 2012, another Orange season record .Nassib has also earned 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Honors.
