SYRACUSE, NY - In its final non-conference game of the regular season, Syracuse women's basketball defeated Boise State, 87-48, behind a career day from freshman guard Brittney Sykes, notching her first double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Orange improved to 12-1 on the season and extended its non-conference home winning streak to 53 games.
"I'm really happy with our effort," said head coach Quentin Hillsman. "I thought the second half we took care of the ball really, really well. We only had five turnovers in the second half. In the first half, I knew that having nine days off and getting players back late from break and due to the winter storm, that we could be a little sloppy. I thought that we were sloppy for the first two minutes and then I thought we settled down and played really, really well for 38 minutes.
The Orange took advantage of the Broncos' turnovers, scoring 33 points off of its 30 turnovers. SU is shot 45.1 percent from the floor, while recording 21 steals. Kayla Alexander added 13 points and three rebounds while La'Shay Taft totaled 10 points and a team-high five steals.
After the Broncos jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the first 1:30 of play, the Orange fought back and a layup by Alexander gave SU its first lead of the night, at 9-7. SU put together a 13-3 run to take a 13-7 advantage at 13:54 in the first half.
Two free throws by Cornelia Fondren gave the Orange a 13 point advantage. Sykes added onto that lead with six straight points and SU lead the Broncos, 31-14, at 7:50.
The Orange closed out the half with an 8-3 run to take a 46-19 lead heading into the locker room.
Syracuse opened up the second half on another run, this time 7-0 run, and set the pace for rest of game with a 53-19.
Halfway through the second half, the Orange was up 68-31 after Alexander hit a layup. SU would continue to build its momentum and four straight points by Sykes helped SU take a 40 point lead, 75-45, at 7:39.
Syracuse's largest lead in the game came at 2:44 in the second half when a Taft hit her second three pointer of the game, making the score 85-43. A bucket by Rachel Coffey and a steal by Taft secured the victory 87-48 triumph.
The Orange heads to Milwaukee to open its final BIG EAST season on Jan. 5 at Marquette.
