"This is a sensational game for this bowl in this year to have two have two incredible universities, Syracuse University, New York's football team, and West Virginia University, who everyone in this town knows about because they've been playing football in this area for a long time," said New York Yankees President, Randy Levine. "These are two incredible, exciting teams. Their fan bases are in this area. There is a history between these two teams."
Syracuse has a 13-9-1 bowl record, including a 1-0 mark for third-year head coach Doug Marrone. This is the second time in three years that the Orange will be playing in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. Syracuse played in the inaugural bowl game at Yankee Stadium in 2010, defeating Kansas State, 36-34.
"I have to tell you how excited we are to be back in the Pinstripe Bowl," said Syracuse Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. "For us, at Syracuse University, to be able to play a great school in West Virginia and partner with the Yankees and be part of the Pinstripe Bowl, is another dream come true. We are just honored to be a part of it and to be with the franchise that we consider the greatest franchise in the history of the world for sports. We talk about ourselves as being New York's College Team and that's representing the entire states, the Empire State and New York City goes hand-in-hand with everything we talk about doing."
With Syracuse and West Virginia reuniting on the gridiron, the game is bound to be an exciting one. Syracuse owns a 32-27 advantage in the series against West Virginia, which is one of Syracuse's oldest rivals. The Orange has won the last two meetings, including a 19-14 victory in Morgantown in 2010 and a 49-23 win in the Carrier Dome in 2011.
"We are excited," said head coach Doug Marrone. "Our kids are excited. Both teams know each other. I think its going to be an outstanding game. I do believe it will be the best game so far with the Pinstripe Bowl. Our fans get a great opportunity. Obvioulsy New York is a foundation for us in recuriting. Our alumni base has an opportunity to see us. Most importantly for me, our kids that are pretty much the majority of our football team, their families are going to be able to come. In my opinon, they get to play in the greatest venue throughout all sports in the whole world at Yankee Stadium."
Syracuse has a rich football history in New York City and the metropolitan area. The Orange is 6-1 all-time at Yankee Stadium, including a 3-0 victory against Pittsburgh in 1923 in the first college football game ever played there. In addition, the Orange has played seven times at the Polo Grounds in New York City and has taken the field for games at Shea Stadium in Flushing, N.Y., and MetLife Stadium and Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
"The Pinstripe Bowl is going to be a great game with two high-powered offenses going head to head," said senior quarterback Ryan Nassib. "It is going to be a lot of fun. When it comes time to prepare for that game, we are going to be ready to go. It will be my last time wearing the Syracuse Orange jersey, and my last time representing the Orange on the football field so it is going to be a lot of fun for me and the other seniors. This is like our Super Bowl."
