Tempe, Ariz. – The Syracuse University softball team (2-0) defeated Cal State Northridge (0-2) in six innings by a score of 10-2 in its second game of the Kajikawa Classic on Friday evening.
The Orange registered 12 hits against the Matadors, highlighted by a two-run homer by Jasmine Watson in the first inning and a three RBI outing from senior Kelly Saco. Pitcher Jenna Caira allowed one hit on the afternoon and recorded 10 strikeouts. In the two Syracuse games today, Caira and Stacy Kuwik gave up a combined two hits.
“It was a good way to start the season by getting to wins,” head coach Leigh Ross said. “Our pitchers threw well today and we had a lot of key hits. It was nice to see production throughout the whole line up, especially in the second game.”
Lisaira Daniels jump-started the offense with a triple down the right field line in the bottom of the first inning. That was followed by Watson's blast to left center to give Syracuse a two run cushion.
CSUN tied the game up in the top of the fourth with a two run shot by M. Thielges. However, SU answered with three runs in the bottom half as Saco, Morgan Nandin and Veronica Grant recorded RBI's.
Saco then hit her second double of the game in the bottom of the fifth, bringing home Carey-Leigh Thomas and Emily Thompson, and giving SU a 7-2 advantage.
The Matador's loaded the bases in their half of the sixth, but a 6-2-3 double play started by Thomas ended the CSUN threat, and SU took advantage in the bottom of the sixth, ultimately ending the game.
Seven different players had an RBI in game two, and on the day, the Orange scored 14 runs and had 17 hits.
SU is back in action tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. EST contest with McNeese State, followed by a contest with No. 8 Arizona at 3:30 p.m. EST.
Game One:
Behind a complete game one hit performance by pitcher Stacy Kuwik and a four-run first inning, the Syracuse University softball team (1-0) defeated Texas State (0-1) 4-0 on Friday morning at the Tempe Sports Complex.
Kuwik had seven strikeouts in her complete game and allowed three walks. She tossed 83 pitches. Before Kuwik entered the circle, SU had given her a four run cushion as the Orange bats erupted in the top of the first.
After a leadoff single by Veronica Grant, and a Stephanie Watts walk, Lacey Kohl roped a two-run double to right center field for a 2-0 advantage.
Jasmine Watson then brought Kohl in with a single and advanced to second on the throw home. Emily Thompson would pinch run for Watson and stole third, then cross the plate on an error to provide the Orange its 4-0 lead.
The Bobcats went down 1-2-3 in each of the first two innings, while SU did not allow a Texas State runner past second base the entire game. Kuwik surrendered her only hit of the game in the fourth inning.
Grant and Watson led the Orange with two hits apiece, while Grant also stole two bases.
