TEMPE, Ariz. – The Syracuse University softball team (3-1) split its two games on Saturday in the second day of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
The Orange defeated McNeese State 11-2 in its first game as Morgan Nandin tied a school record with seven RBI. Syracuse was then dealt an 11-1 defeat by No. 8 Arizona in its afternoon game.
Game One:
Morgan Nandin set a school record with seven RBI's to lead Syracuse (3-0) past McNeese State (2-2) on Saturday morning 11-2 at the Tempe Sports Complex.
Syracuse took the early lead in the top of the second when Kelly Saco brought home Carey-Leigh Thomas. Nandin then singled down the left field line to bring in Stephanie Watts. Shirley Daniels followed that with her first career homerun with a blast to right field.
The Orange added to its lead in the top of the third, courtesy of a two-run double from Nandin which brought home Thomas and pinch runner Emily Thompson, and gave SU and pitcher Jenna Caira a 6-0 cushion.
Caira was dealing early, striking out five of the first nine Cowgirls. McNeese State was scoreless through three innings.
After Watts and Saco reached to start the fifth inning, Nandin struck again, this time with a three-run homerun. It was her first home run of the season and the second of her career.
Nandin would then add a sac fly in the top of the sixth for her school record seventh run-batted in. She tied Hallie Gibbs seven RBI output last year when SU defeated Rutgers 23-0.
Caira registered six strikeouts and surrendered three hits in four innings of work. Freshman Lindsay Taylor finished the afternoon in the circle for the Orange.
Game Two:
No. 8 Arizona (2-2) hit three homeruns on its way to an 11-1 five inning victory. The Wildcats dealt Syracuse (3-1) its first loss of the season.
U of A got on the board with a three run shot off of starting pitcher Stacy Kuwik in the top of the first inning and never looked back.
Syracuse, trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the second, got one run back as Shirley Daniels singled to bring home Stephanie Watts, SU's all-time leader in runs scored. Watts reached base with a single earlier in the inning and advanced to second as Morgan Nandin drew a walk.
That would be all the offense would manage, however. Arizona starting pitcher Jessica Spigner pitched all five innings and allowed just three hits. She also smacked the three-run homer in the bottom of the first.
The Orange will face its second-consecutive Top 10 team tomorrow in its final game of the Kajikawa Classic as SU battles No. 3 California at 1:00 p.m. EST.
