With its 12-7 win against Albany, the Orange notched its school-record 16th consecutive season-opening victory, eclipsing the previous mark of 15 straight openers won from 1924-38. The last time Syracuse lost a season starter was 1996, 17-15, at Virginia.
The current streak of season-opening wins began in 1997 when No. 3 Syracuse beat No. 2 Virginia by the score of 22-21. The game was one of the most epic in college lacrosse history. Orange star Casey Powell set a school record with 13 points on seven goals and six assists. The 43 combined goals is the most ever in a game featuring Syracuse, and the two sides attempted an NCAA-record tying 47 faceoffs.
Since the 1997 matchup, Syracuse and Virginia have played two more openers with the Orange emerging with narrow victories in both (18-17 in 1998 and 13-12 in overtime in 2000).
Outside its games with the Cavaliers, Syracuse has won its season starters rather decisively during the streak. The Orange's average margin of victory over that time is 5.9 goals. Its most lopsided win came in 2009 when it defeated Providence by 19, 22-3.
For the entire 16-year stretch, the Orange has entered each season ranked in the top 10 and has started the year with the No. 1 ranking four times (2001, 2003, 2009 and 2010).
