As he hoisted the Super Bowl XLVI trophy above his head on Sunday night, Syracuse football alum Tom Coughlin solidified his place in pro football lore. It is his second world championship as the New York Giants head coach. Many have speculated that this triumph secures a spot for Coughlin in Canton. If Coughlin is to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he will join his fellow Syracuse backfield mates Floyd Little and Larry Csonka in wearing the yellow jacket. It will make Syracuse the only school to have an entire backfield enshrined.
Coughlin and fellow SU alum Markus Paul, the Giants assistant strength and conditioning coach, celebrated their 21-17 victory against the New England Patriots at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis after previously helping to guide the Giants to football immortality in Super Bowl XLII when they defeated the Patriots, 17-14.
Coughlin is one of 13 head coaches to win multiple Super Bowls. He joins a list of coaches with two Super Bowl rings, which includes Don Shula, Bill Parcells and Vince Lombardi, for whom the Super Bowl trophy is named. Coughlin also matches Csonka, who won consecutive Super Bowls in 1972 and 1973 with the Miami Dolphins. At 65 years-old, Coughlin is the oldest Super Bowl-winning coach and his eight playoff victories tie him with Parcells for the most in franchise history.
A three-year letterman at Syracuse, Coughlin broke SU's single-season pass receiving record as a senior in 1967, making 26 catches for 257 yards. In his college career, Coughlin caught 34 passes for 367 yards and rushed for 336 yards on 65 carries.
Coughlin began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Syracuse in 1969. From 1974-76, Coughlin served as Syracuse's quarterbacks coach. He was promoted by SU to offensive coordinator in 1977, acting in the position until 1980.
A four-year starter, an All-American and senior captain for the Orange, Paul holds the school record with 19 career interceptions. He tied the SU record with three interceptions against Temple in 1985. In 1988, he recorded 76 tackles en route to earning All-America honors.
Syracuse has had 34 former football players to compete in 32 different Super Bowls, with 49 overall appearances. Thirty-two former Orange standouts boast Super Bowl titles.
