The top-seeded Syracuse University men's basketball team has advanced their way into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament behind strong second half efforts in victories against UNC Ashville and Kansas State.
Fifth-year senior point guard and captain Scoop Jardine has played in all but one minute of the two second halves in the first two games and has scored 25 of his 27 tournament points in the second half. Jardine averaged 8.6 ppg during the regular season, but has improved his scoring to 13.5 ppg in the tournament.
Junior forward James Southerland is a combined 11-for-14 from the field and 5-for-7 from behind the three point line. Of his 30 total points in both games, 26 of them have been scored in the second half. Southerland has lifted his scoring average from 6.6 ppg in the regular season to 15 ppg in the tournament.
The Orange has also benefitted from improved free throw shooting. During the regular season, SU shot 69.6 percent from the free throw line, but in the NCAA Tournament, the Orange is shooting 75.5 percent. Sophomore guard Dion Waiters has led the way with a perfect 10-for-10 at the line while Jardine is 7-for-8 from the charity stripe. Senior forward and captain Kris Joseph, who has played in every minute of the second half during the tournament, is 13-for-15 from the line.
The Syracuse Orange (33-2) will take on the fourth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers (26-9) at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday night at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston. The game will be aired on CBS, with the other East Regional Sweet 16 matchup, Ohio State and Cincinnati to follow.
