SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's crew hosted its first home regatta of the spring on Saturday at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse against Boston University, Cornell and Rutgers in the Kittell Cayuga Combo.
Head Coach Justin Moore's Orange varsity eight went 1-1 on the day, defeating Rutgers (7:10.2) in the consolation race in a time of 6:56.4. That came after a one-length defeat to Boston University (6:45.8) in the day's first race, a 6:47.4 finish for the Orange. The Terriers victory secured them the Kittell Cup, contested annually by SU and BU.
“Our varsity eight was a little over-aggressive in the first 1,000 meters and didn't have a gear to shift to in the second 1,000 when BU really pressed us,” SU assistant coach Alicea Kochis said. “We learned a lot from the first race and had a much better organized and executed race against Rutgers.”
Cornell, ranked No. 16, took the V8 final with a time of 6:55.7, as the Big Red would go on to take first place in all other events (2V8, 3V8, V4).
The Orange second varsity eight (7:08.2, 7:09.8), third varsity eight (7:23.0, 7:21.9) and varsity four (7:58.9, 8:06.4) all posted very strong opening races, defeating BU boats in each, before being stopped by Cornell in the finals (2V8: 6:57.1, 3V8: 7:14.7, V4: 7:48.4).
“We saw some good speed from our 2V, which continues to make progress, Kochis said. “Our four and the 3V also put together better races. Top to bottom, I feel we are really moving in the right direction.”
Temperatures were in the mid-30s with wind chills below freezing at the Onondaga Lake Outlet, with slight waves in the first 500 meters of the downwind course and calm as the boats entered the outlet.
The Orange, receiving votes in this week's CRA/USRowing Coaches Poll, remains home next weekend to host RV Northeastern and RV Penn on Saturday at the Ten Eyck Boathouse near Longbranch Park.
