ORLANDO - Shirley Daniels and Lacey Kohl each hit solo home runs to propel the Syracuse University softball team (9-6) past No. 11 Baylor (14-5), 2-1, on Sunday morning in SU's finale at the Citrus Classic.
The Orange finished the weekend with a 4-1 record and knocked off three ranked teams along with way (No. 24 North Carolina, No. 15 Michigan, No. 11 Baylor). It's only loss came against No. 17 Auburn.
Jenna Caira threw a complete game and struck out seven Bears while only allowing three hits. She was 3-0 this weekend and is now 6-3 on the season with a 2.35 ERA.
Daniels' homer came in the third inning with one out as she took the 2-1 count to deep right field off of Baylor pitcher Liz Paul. Kohl provided SU with a 2-0 lead an inning later with an opposite field shot.
In the bottom of the fourth, Caira struck out Kathy Shelton but she reached first base on a passed ball. After she was moved to second on a ground out, Shelton was brought home with a double by Megan Turk. But that would be all for Baylor as they would only have one base runner for the remainder of the game.
“That was Jenna's best game of the season. She had great command all day,” head coach Leigh Ross said. “We changed the line up a bit because of the depth we have. We are more than just nine starters.
“We turned a corner this weekend. Instead of just playing the top teams in the country, we beat the tops in the country this weekend, and that will give the girls a good mind set moving forward to the post season knowing we can win these games.”
The Orange returns to Florida next weekend to participate in the USF Under Armor Classic. Syracuse will play Miami (OH), USC Upstate, Boston University, Kennesaw State and Virginia Tech in Tampa.
