CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Syracuse University softball team (9-6) travels to Florida for the second consecutive weekend, as the team participates in the USF Under Armour Invite in Clearwater, Fla. SU will play five games, highlighted by a match-up with USC Upstate, who is receiving votes in the most recent NFCA/USA Today Top 25 Poll.
The Orange opens with Miami (OH) and -/rv USC Upstate on Friday. On Saturday, Syracuse is paired against Boston University and Kennesaw State. The team wraps up competition against Virginia Tech on Sunday.
For its performance this season, the team was ranked No. 23 in the nation in the most recent ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 Poll. The ranking marks the highest the Orange has ever been ranked in the history of the program.
Syracuse looks to carry over the momentum from last weekend, when it defeated three nationally-ranked opponents and went 4-1 at the Citrus Classic. The three wins against the Top 25 were a program best in one weekend of competition.
College Sports Madness, in conjunction with USA Today, recognized senior Jenna Caira as the softball National Pitcher of the Week for her performance at the Citrus Classic. Caira was also named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for her efforts. She was a perfect 3-0 in the circle with all of her wins coming against nationally ranked opponents. The Toronto native struck out 17 batters in 20 innings of work, while allowing just 13 hits. She had a 1.05 ERA in the three games.
