SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse track & field team will be represented by two student-athletes this weekend at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championship in Nampa, Idaho. Senior Jarret Eaton, who earned an automatic qualifying bid during the regular season in the 60-meter hurdles, will be joined by senior Flings Owusu-Agyapong in the women's 60-meter dash.
"We are very pleased to have both Jarret and Flings qualify for the national meet," said assistant coach Dave Hegland. "They have each represented Syracuse previously at the NCAA level and should be very comfortable on that stage. We look forward to a great meet in Boise."
Eaton (Abington, Pa.), who was named the United States Track & Field and Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Northeast Region Male Track Athlete of the Year on Monday, captured the 2012 BIG EAST Championship in the 60-meter hurdles with a meet-record time of 7.70 seconds. Eaton also competed at the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Eaton also owns the nation's fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles this season at 7.49 seconds, a mark set at the Penn State National Invitational. The time is the second fastest time ever recorded for a collegiate runner in the event, and is the fifth fastest time in the world this season. Eaton was named the BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week twice this season, and was added to the Bowerman Watch List on Feb. 1. The Bowerman Award recognizes the nation's top male and female track & field athletes.
Owusu-Agyapong won the 2012 BIG EAST Championship in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.41 seconds on Feb. 19. Her season best time of 7.34 seconds, a mark that broke her own school record, was set at the Penn State National Invitational and is currently tied for the 16th best time in the country this season with LSU's Takeia Pinckney and TCU's Chaniqua Corinealdi. Owusu-Agyapong needed a time of 7.23 seconds to earn automatic qualification. Owusu-Agyapong also competed at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championship.
NCAA competition begins on Friday afternoon with Eaton's preliminary heat at 5:30 p.m. at Jackson's Indoor Track in Nampa. Owusu-Agyapong will run her preliminary race at 6:45 p.m. Boise State University is the host of this year's Championship.
ESPN3.com will stream the meet live on March 9 from 7:30-11:45 p.m. and March 10 from 8:00-11:15 p.m. A tape delay of the championship will air Sunday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
