Marrone Praises Orange Senior Class

The Syracuse football program and head coach Doug Marrone honored 22 members of its senior class at the annual awards banquet. The 2011 senior class includes team captains Antwon Bailey, Adam Harris and Kevyn Scott, in addition to Michael Acchione, Ian Allport, Torrey Ball, Van Chew, Cayden Feifer, Olando Fisher, Dorian Graham, Oliver Haney, Michael Hay, Chandler Jones, Shane Kimmel, Tombe Kose, Nick Lepak, Jarel Lowery, Mikhail Marinovich, Nick Provo, Shane Raupers, Andrew Tiller and Thomas Trendowski, and senior managers John Applebee, Sean Eberly, Garrett McLaughlin, Ricky Ricco and Darius Rose.
“Success is a product of hard work,” said Marrone in an address to the senior class. “Quick fixes do not last. The senior class has stood shoulder to shoulder in building this program, putting in the hard work, never cutting corners. You were our first marines into an ugly battle. You entered with your eyes wide open and your heads held high. I am proud to have shared the fox hole with each of you. I will never forget any of you. We will finish what you started. You, the senior class, will have ownership in every victory Syracuse football enjoys.”
Eleven individuals were honored with team awards for their contributions to the 2011 team and the Orange football program.
The Bill Horr Award for Most Valuable Player was awarded to Provo. An All-BIG EAST First Team selection, Provo set the Syracuse single-season record for receptions by a tight end with 51. His 537 receiving yards ranks second on the single-season list for tight ends. Against West Virginia, Provo caught a career-high three touchdowns passes, which ties for third on the SU single-game record list. The 2011 Mackey Award semifinalist and All-ECAC selection holds the Syracuse career record for receptions by a tight end with 92 and ranks second on the list for receiving yards by a tight end with 1,027. He closed his career with a streak of 25 consecutive games with a reception, which ranks fifth all-time at Syracuse and is the longest streak for a tight end.
Marinovich won the Ray Martino Award for loyalty, enthusiasm and perseverance. A three-year starter, Marinovich played in 48 games, recording 81 total tackles, including eight sacks, forcing three fumbles and recovering three fumbles. In 2011, he recorded four tackles, including three solo, had two sacks and forced a fumble against Rutgers, and had a career-best six tackles against Wake Forest.
For the second year in a row, Jones earned the Tim Green Award for outstanding defensive lineman. The 2011 All-BIG EAST First Team defensive end started all seven games he played, recording 38 tackles, including 4.5 sacks. Against West Virginia, Jones earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording six solo tackles, including two sacks for a loss of 19 yards. At Pittsburgh, he had four solo tackles, including two for a total loss of four yards, and his first career interception, which he returned 32 yards.
A 2011 team captain, Harris won the Pat Miller Award, which is given to an outstanding athlete, student and citizen. He earned 2010 and 2011 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team honors and was a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic team. A two-year starter, Harris paved the way for a 1,000 yard rusher in each of those seasons. Also a contributor on the special teams coverage units, Harris had 12 career tackles. Against Wake Forest, he scored his first career touchdown in the fourth quarter to help the Orange overcome a 12-point deficit to win the game 36-29 in overtime.
The Duffy Daugherty Player's Player, Coaches Player Award was presented to Tiller. A 2011 All-BIG EAST First Team selection, Tiller started all 25 games as a junior and senior and played in 35 during his Syracuse career. He blocked for 1,000-yard rushers Delone Carter and Antwon Bailey in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
A three-year letter winner at SU, Graham earned the Joe Szombathy Special Teams Award. Graham returned 13 kicks for 293 yards and one touchdown and recorded five tackles as a gunner on punt coverage. Against West Virginia in 2011, he earned BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week after he returned two kickoffs for 115 yards, including a 98-yard touchdown, and caught five passes for 66 yards. As a receiver, Graham caught 24 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns in 2011.
A 2011 team captain, Scott earned the Joe Alexander Award for excellence in football, scholarship and citizenship. Scott was a 2011 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree and a four- time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection. He played in 41 career games, recording 87 tackles and five interceptions. Against Toledo, Scott sealed the victory by intercepting a pass in the end zone in overtime, while his fourth-quarter interception against Wake Forest stopped the Demon Deacons potential game-winning drive.
A two-year starter at tackle, junior Justin Pugh earned the Ben Schwartzwalder Exemplary Football Player Award. Pugh was selected to the 2011 All-BIG EAST First Team after earning second team honors in 2010. He helped block for 1,000-yard rushers Delone Carter and Antwon Bailey in each of the last two seasons, respectively.
The third-leading rusher in Syracuse history, Bailey earned the Mark Hoffman Award for most outstanding back. A 2011 team captain, Bailey rushed for 1,051 yards in 2011, which ranks 10th on the Orange single-season list. The 2011 All-BIG EAST First Team selection owns the school records for career receptions (91) and receiving yards (706) by a running back. Bailey posted six 100-yard rushing games in 2011. Against Wake Forest, Bailey rushed for a career-high two touchdowns and had a career-long 53-yard touchdown run.
The Coach “Mac” Award for intensity, focus, effort and attitude was presented to junior Dan Vaughan. The three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection, Vaughan recorded 72 tackles, including 40 solo and 6.5 for a loss, in 2011. Against, Rutgers, he had a career-high 15 tackles.
Ball earned the Thomas S. Pirro Award for character and coach-ability. He played in all 36 games in his three years at Syracuse, recording 58 tackles, including 6.5 for a loss. At USC in 2011, he collected two solo tackles, including a sack for a loss of 10 yards. A three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree, Ball made the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in every semester at SU.
The 2012 Orange will play the annual Spring game on Saturday, April 21 at the Carrier Dome. Gates open at 10:00 a.m. for the annual 'Select-A-Seat,' during which fans are invited to walk the Dome to choose from the best available seating for their 2012 season tickets. The Orange will take the field at 11:00 a.m. and the Spring game begins at Noon. Admission and parking are free. Following the game all fans are invited to participate in an autograph session in the Carrier Dome concourses.
At 3 pm the Syracuse men's lacrosse team hosts Georgetown. All fans at the Spring football game are invited to stay in the Dome and attend the men's lacrosse contest at no charge.
