SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After an indoor season which saw Jarret Eaton win Syracuse's first individual track and field national championship, the Orange will return to the track this weekend to begin its outdoor season. SU will be sending student-athletes to four locations across the country, including meets at Auburn, Cornell, Princeton and Stanford.
Indoor Season In Review
It was an indoor season to remember for Syracuse in 2012 as the Orange broke four school records (one men, three women) and sent two student-athletes to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Nampa, Idaho.
Eaton capped a perfect season by winning the 60-meter hurdles at the national championships with a time of 7.54 seconds, defeating his competitors by 0.01 seconds en route to a United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American selection. Eaton ran the fastest 60-meter hurdle time in the nation and fifth fastest time in the world at 7.49 seconds, a feat he accomplished at the Penn State National Invitational.
The time is the second fastest time ever recorded for a collegiate runner in the event. Eaton was named the BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week twice this season, and was added to the Bowerman Watch List on Feb. 1. The Bowerman Award recognizes the nation's top male and female track & field athletes.
Flings Owusu-Agyapong was one of 18 participants in the 60-meter dash at the NCAA Championships, where she finished 16th with a time of 7.43 seconds. Owusu-Agyapong won the 2012 BIG EAST Championship in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.41 seconds on Feb. 19. Her season best time of 7.34 seconds, a mark that broke her own school record, was set at the Penn State National Invitational and is currently tied for the 16th best time in the country this season with LSU's Takeia Pinckney and TCU's Chaniqua Corinealdi.
Senior Lauren Penney broke two school records during the indoor season, both of which she previously owned. At the Husky Classic in early February, she broke the 3000-meter school record with a time of 9:12.76, beating her previous time by more than three seconds. She also bested her SU record in the mile run at the Penn State National Invitational with a time of 4:39. A 2011 All-American in cross country, she finished third in the 5000-meter run at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship (16:38.31).
Sophomore Molly Malone, who captured the silver medal in the 2000-meter race at 2:48.58, broke the school record in the 800-meter run at the SPIRE Division I Track and Field Invite in early February with a time of 2:07.81.
