SYRACUSE, N.Y. - For the second consecutive Saturday, the Syracuse women's rowing team hosted a home regatta at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse, hosting Northeastern and Penn for the Orange Challenge Cup.
The Quakers took home the cup, winning the day's marquee event, the varsity eight, with a time of 7:09.8. The Huskies finished second in 7:14.4 and the Orange was third in 7:17.4.
Though the teams finished in the same order as last year's Orange Challenge Cup, Justin Moore's V8, coxed by senior Allison Todd, reduced its margin to the Quakers from 12.5 to 7.6 seconds, and to the Huskies from 9.8 to 3.0 seconds.
The SU second varsity eight made an aggressive move in the final 500 meters to overtake Northeastern (7:37.8) for second place in a time of 7:33.8. Penn finished first in 7:27.4. The SU 2V8 finished third in the event last season.
The varsity four “B” race marked the Orange's lone victory of the regatta with an open water win in 8:46.4 over Penn (9:01.7) and Northeastern (9:11.8).
Syracuse's varsity four posted a second-place finish in 8:48.8 behind the Quakers (8:35.4) and ahead of the Huskies (9:11.8).
Crews faced temperatures in the low 40s and variable headwinds out of the Northwest at the Onondaga Lake Outlet near Longbranch Park, despite sunny skies.
The Orange makes the trek east down I-90 next weekend to Boston for the Charles River Challenge on April 14.
