With the NCAA East Preliminary Round scheduled to begin Thursday afternoon in Jacksonville, Fla., four Orange men and two women will represent SU in the sprinting and hurdling events throughout the weekend. Led by BIG EAST Champion Jarret Eaton in the 110-meter hurdles, Syracuse is poised to make a run to the national championship events in Des Moines, Iowa on June 6-9.
Eaton (Abington, Pa.) came off a national championship winning indoor season in the 60-meter hurdles with a successful start to the outdoor season, qualifying for conference and IC4A championships in his first race of the regular season. His season best time of 13.47 seconds at the BIG EAST Championship is fourth in the East heading into the weekend. In addition to the hurdling events this season, Eaton has competed with the 4x100-meter relay team, which took third at the conference championship (40.62 seconds).
Eaton, the 2012 'Cuse Awards Male Athlete of the Year and Performance of the Year winner, is currently receiving mention for the 2012 Bowerman Award, which is presented annually to the top men's and women's collegiate track and field performer. He will be making his first appearance at Regionals since his sophomore campaign in 2009.
Amadou Gueye, making his first-ever appearance at the East Preliminary Round, ran a collegiate best time of 14.14 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles in his most recent race. He sits fifth in the BIG EAST in the 110-meter hurdles. The Albany, N.Y. native finished fifth at the BIG EAST Championship, and also ran with the 4x400-meter relay team that qualified for the IC4A Championship at the Tiger Track Classic. Senior Matthew Callanan (Mansfield, Mass.) is competing in his second straight NCAA East Regional, and had a season-best time of 14.39 seconds (Tiger Track Classic), which is 39th in the region entering this weekend's competition.
Sophomore Jaquan Holland finished third in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash at the BIG EAST Championship, helping the men's team to its best conference finish since 2007, and will run in both events this weekend. His season best times in the 100-meter (10.88 seconds) and 200-meter (20.87) came at the Tiger Track Classic and BIG EAST, respectively. The Brookhaven, N.Y. native is making his first appearance at Regionals, and ranks 21st in the 100-meters and 22nd in the 200-meters.
On the women's side, graduate student Flings Owusu-Agyapong will competes in the East Preliminary Round for the third time in her career after taking second at both the BIG EAST (11.49 seconds) and ECAC Championships (11.70). Owusu-Agyapong (Toronto, Ontario) was named an Honorable Mention All-American in the 100-meter dash after finishing 20th overall last season (11.72 seconds), and ranks 21st in the East.
Rounding out the Syracuse field is junior SaDe Lewis (Peyton, Ohio) in the 100-meter hurdles. After placing eighth at the BIG EAST Championship (13.94 seconds), she followed it up with a bronze medal in the same event at the ECAC Championship and a season-best time of 13.94 seconds. Lewis is one of only eight representatives from the BIG EAST in the event, and is making her first appearance in Regional competition.
Both men's and women's 100-meter and 200-meter events, along with the men's 110-meter hurdles and women's 100-meter hurdles, will advance the top three from each heat, plus the next nine fastest times to the national quarterfinal, which runs on Saturday. In that race, only the top three from each heat, plus the next three quickest times will advance to Des Moines, Iowa and the national semifinal.
