No. 8 Crew Races At IRA Championship

No. 8 Syracuse men's crew's season reaches its pinnacle this weekend as the Orange heads to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. on May 31-June 2.
Dave Reischman's Orange will have four boats racing for titles: the varsity eight, second varsity eight, freshmen eight and open four. Syracuse earned one of the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges' (EARC) nine IRA bids by virtue of finishing second in its heat and making the grand final in the varsity eight at the EARC Sprints on May 13.
The Board of Stewards of the IRA announced the full list of crews qualified and accepted for the 110th IRA Regatta last week.
Race Coverage
Over 15 hours of live video coverage of the IRA Regatta will be available online courtesy of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and Community Structure.
The online broadcast schedule is as follows:
Thursday: 8 a.m.-12:15 p.m., 2-3:45 p.m.
Friday: 8:30-10:30 a.m., 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Saturday: 7 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Thursday Draws
All four Syracuse boats will race in opening heats on Thursday morning. The V8, 2V8 and F8 events will feature three heats with the top two in each advancing to Friday's semifinals. The rest will race in Thursday afternoon's repechages. The top three finishers in each events repechagse will advance to Friday's semifinals while the rest will be sent to the third final. The V8 and F8 will have two reps, while the 2V8 will have one.
The Syracuse V8, ranked eighth in the USRowing Collegiate Poll, will race in the first heat of the day Thursday at 8 a.m. in lane two. Racing in the Orange's heat will be No. 14 Penn (lane 1), No. 2 Brown (lane 3), No. 6 Wisconsin (lane 4), No. 11 Yale (lane 5) and RV Gonzaga (lane 6).
SU's 2V8 will race in the 8:45 a.m. heat in lane two against Gonzaga (lane 1), California (lane 3), Harvard (lane 4), Boston University (lane 5) and Drexel (lane 6).
Syracuse will race in the middle heat in the F8 at 9:45 a.m. in lane five against Yale (lane 1), Princeton (lane 2), Washington (lane 3), Brown (lane 4) and George Washington (lane 6).
In the open four, there will be two heats with the winner of each going on to the semifinals. Syracuse's O4 will race in lane two of the second heat at 11:15 a.m. against Northeastern (lane 1), California (lane 3), Drexel (lane 4), Cornell (lane 5) and Penn (lane 6).
Orange Update
Syracuse comes into the season's highlight event rowing its best as results and times have improved for Reischman's crew throughout the season.
In its last racing, the Packard Cup Regatta against Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H., the Orange swept all four races against the 15th-ranked Big Green on the Connecticut River. The V8 showed a strong change of speed in the third 500 meters to overtake Dartmouth for a 2.6-second victory and SU's sixth Packard Cup win in the last seven years. The 2V8, F8 and O4 all recorded wins in dual races as well.
The Orange finished the season 2-1 in cup races, winning the Conlan Cup Boston and losing the Goes Trophy on Onondaga Lake.
The Orange put in a strong performance at the Eastern Sprints on May 13 in Worcester, Mass. SU's V8, then ranked 11th, finished second (5:57.351) in its heat to No. 3 Brown (5:54.643) and ahead of No. 7 Cornell (5:59.779) to make the grand final and qualify for the IRA. The Orange went on to finish sixth in a grand final that featured five of the top 10 V8s in the country.
SU's open four finished second at Sprints, while the second varsity eight won the petite final and the freshmen eight finished fifth in the petite final.
Last Season's IRA
Syracuse recorded two top-nine finishes at the 109th IRA Regatta in 2011. The varsity eight and second varsity eight both placed ninth overall. The varsity four finished 12th overall and the freshman eight ended their season 15th overall. Syracuse finished 10th in the Ten Eyck Team Championship with 92 points. The Orange won the Francis Shields Bowl with its victory in the Master's Eight Alumni race.
The seventh-seeded varsity eight finished third in the Petite Final and ninth overall. Syracuse recorded a time of 5:43.120. No. 13 Cornell won the Petite Final in 5:41.526.
Syracuse's second varsity eight, seeded fifth also placed third in its Petite Final and ninth overall The Orange crossed the finish line in 5:51.26. No. 8 Yale won the Petite Final in 5:46.992.
The Orange varsity four rowed to sixth-place showing in its Petite Final and 12th overall, finishing in 6:41.698. George Washington won the Petite Final in 6:25.627.
The 11th-seeded freshman eight finished third in the Third Level Final and 15th overall. Syracuse registered a time of 5:54.648. No. 10 Yale won the Third Level Final in 5:53.628.
IRA History
Syracuse has won a total of 27 IRA championships. Six of those titles have been won by varsity eight boats, the last in 1978.
Syracuse made its first IRA appearance in 1901 on the Hudson River. It won its first championships in 1904, in the varsity and freshmen eights, two years after James A. Ten Eyck took over as head coach. The regatta's team trophy now bears his name. “The Sly Fox of the Hudson” led SU to subsequent varsity eight titles in 1908, 1913, 1916 and 1920. SU did not win another V8 title until Bill Sanford led Syracuse to the 1978 championship.
SU's 12 freshmen eight titles were in 1904, 1906, 1915, 1922, 1925, 1929, 1930, 1932, 1956, 1976, 1977 and 1978.
The Orange has won six second varsity eight titles with those coming in 1916, 1923, 1931, 1932, 1934 and 1939.
From 1952-1992, the regatta was held on the home water of the Orange, Onondaga Lake. The race had to be moved in 1993 due to flooding, but returned in 1994. It had been held in Camden since 1995, but was moved to Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. for one season in 2009. The regatta has also been held on the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, Saratoga Lake, the Ohio River and Cayuga Lake.
