CAMDEN, N.J. - For the second time in three seasons and just the second time since 1990, the Syracuse men's crew varsity eight will be rowing in the grand final at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta.
Dave Reischman's Orange V8, ranked eighth-nationally, made the field of six for Saturday's grand final by out-sprinting No. 5 Princeton for third place in the first of two semifinals on Friday after storms delayed racing on the Cooper River.
The top three boats from each semifinal made the grand final, while the remaining three from each will race in Saturday's petite final.
Rowing into headwinds, the V8 of Isaac Budmen (coxswain), Aidan Barrett (stroke), Mike Dietrick (7), Chris Bickford (6), Chris Lutz (5), Mason Leasure (4), Mac Zink (3), James Olson (2) and Jake Martens (bow) took a one to two seat lead on the Tigers midway through the race, and after Princeton (6:25.545) rallied, found another gear to take third by over a half a second in a time of 6:24.911.
No. 2 Brown (6:17.211) finished first in the race and No. 3 Harvard (6:22.500) took second in a repeat of the grand final at Eastern Sprints last month.
The Orange, Bears and Crimson will be joined in Saturday's grand final by No. 1 Washington, No. 10 Boston University and No. 4 California.
Reischman's Orange V8 made the grand final in 2010, finishing sixth.
SU's second varsity eight finished sixth in its semifinal race in a time of 6:39.601, sending the Orange to Saturday's 2V8 petite final.
Syracuse's open four boat finished fifth in its repechage in a time of 7:51.947. The Orange will race in Saturday's third level open four final.
