Redshirt senior hurdler Jarret Eaton, who finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles last weekend at the NCAA Championship, added to his growing list of accolades on Tuesday. Eaton was named a United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) First Team All-American, the second straight honor for Eaton, who was also named an indoor All-American after capturing the national title in the 60-meter hurdles.
"This is truly a great honor to represent Syracuse at a national level," Eaton said. "I appreciate all the support I've received leading up to and during the meet. I will always bleed Orange."
In addition, seniors Katie Hursey (3000-meter steeplechase), Tito Medrano (10,000-meter run) and Lauren Penney (5,000-meter run), as well as junior Sarah Pagano (10,000-meter run) were all named Honorable Mention All-Americans on Tuesday after competing at the national championship last week.
Eaton had a season to remember for the Orange in 2012. During the indoor season, the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Track Athlete of the Year captured Syracuse's first individual track and field national championship with a first place finish in the 60-meter hurdles. Eaton won the event by 0.01 seconds with a time of 7.54 seconds. Also during the indoor campaign, the Abington, Pa. native broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles at 7.49 seconds, a time that was the fifth fastest in the world in 2012 and also the second fastest collegiate time ever recorded.
"Jarret continues to perform great and all his accolades are well earned," said head coach Chris Fox. "He has given our track program a national spotlight this year."
Eaton continued his success during the outdoor season, as well, securing his second BIG EAST title of the year in the 110-meter hurdles and broke Adrian Woodley's school record of 13.50 seconds in the preliminary heats at the conference championships with a time of 13.47 seconds. After shifting his focus to the outdoor national stage, Eaton ran a time of 13.44 seconds at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla., a mark that automatically qualified him for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
"Jarret capped a great collegiate career with another All-American certificate," assistant coach Dave Hegland said. "He's meant a lot to our program, and we're very grateful for all that he's done while representing our program and university."
Eaton will look to become the first Orange track and field Olympian since 2000 when the U.S. Olympic Trials begin on June 22 in Eugene, Ore. Eaton will compete in the qualifying heats of the 110-meter hurdles on June 29 at 7:05 p.m. (ET).
