The Syracuse football team has a new addition to its collection of equipment this season to help SU's performance off the field. Each Orange football student-athlete is receiving a state-of-the-art iPad to use during their time at Syracuse to help enhance their experience in the classroom.
"I know that Coach (Doug) Marrone has (an iPad), and was very enamored by the capabilities of it," said Max Miller, senior academic coordinator for football. "He felt that it would be a good tool for our guys in the classroom."
The iPads were purchased with funds specifically contributed by a donor to support the football program. Coach Marrone made the decision to utilize the funds for this academic purpose. The iPad offers a various collection of applications to provide assistance in day-to-day academic activities, ranging from word processing software to organizational assistance.
"Some of the apps will be great for the guys," Miller said. "One is Dragon Dictation, which is a great app that dictates anything that you say. Another thing that will help with the word processing aspect is that the keyboard splits up. Some of our guys might not know how to type very well, but what they do know how to do is text. The keyboard pulls apart and serves as two texting keyboards."
The student-athletes, 28 of which earned selection to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team in 2011, will also have access to the university Blackboard app, enabling them to keep all of their notes in a useful location.
"They can be anywhere and pull up their notes and PowerPoint's right in class so that they don't have to print out the paper forms," said Miller. "It's going to be a great tool for us to be able to monitor their grades, as well, because they can bring their Blackboard to us."
When the Orange is on the road this season, the Text-to-Speech app will allow them to read and listen to their class material without missing a beat.
"If they're on a trip, they can plug in their headphones and listen to all of their lectures," said Miller. "It's going to be great for some of our audio learners."
Syracuse will begin the 2012 season on September 1 against Northwestern in the Carrier Dome. Tickets are available online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) or by calling 1-888-DOME-TIX.
