Medrano And Pagano Set For NCAA 10,000-M

Senior Tito Medrano and junior Sarah Pagano will represent Syracuse in the men's and women's 10,000 meter runs at this week's NCAA Outdoor Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. Medrano is making his second straight appearance in the national final, while Pagano will have here first chance to compete for a national title.
"This is a pretty big jump," head coach Chris Fox said. "All of these kids have to be in the top-24 in the country in their event, and considering that there are probably 1,000 kids in each event, they're doing pretty good."
Pagano (Ringwood, N.J.) nabbed the final spot at the NCAA East Preliminary Round to qualify for the national final with a time of 34:41.58. She also captured the gold at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship in Tampa, Fla. with a time of 34:37.94. Pagano will run for the national title on Thursday at 9:45 p.m. (ET).
"It is definitely a great honor to be there," Pagano said. "I'm really excited to go out there and compete for Syracuse. I think everyone who is going has worked really hard this season, and it's a great honor for Syracuse."
Medrano (Lafayette, Ind.) finished second overall in the 10,000-meter run (30:05.75) at the East Preliminary Round to reach the national final for the second straight season. He finished 12th last year at the national championship to earn Second Team All-American honors.
"I have a lot of pride in being here as a Syracuse student-athlete representing our team and all of the training we've done all year," Medrano said. "Personally, I want to compete better than I did last year. Last season, I ran a smart race and put myself in a good position to do well, but I didn't put myself in a position to get First Team All-American. The race separated itself, and this time I want to stick my nose in it and fight all the way."
Medrano has the sixth quickest time in the 10,000-meter run in the 24-athlete field, and will run on Wednesday night at 8:45 p.m. (ET). He finished fifth in the same event at the BIG EAST Championship (33:12.16).
ESPN3.com will broadcast the national championship on June 7-9, while ESPNU will air live coverage on June 9 beginning at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
