Eaton Looks For Second National Title

Senior hurdler Jarret Eaton has his eyes set on his second national title of the season this week at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. Eaton, the winner of the NCAA Indoor national title in the 60-meter hurdles, will be competing in the 110-meter hurdles looking to become the sixth student-athlete since 1999 to win both the 60 and 110-meter championships.
"I feel like I have a duty to represent for the SU sprint team," Eaton said. "Everybody goes for that national title, and if I can win indoor and outdoor, that's really satisfying and confirming that everything I've done up to this point has been worth something and has been for the right reasons."
The Abington, Pa. native qualified for the national semifinal at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on June 6 with a school record breaking time of 13.44 seconds. In addition, that time also qualified Eaton for the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. on June 22-July 1.
"From there, you have to go through some rounds and make it to the final, where they pick the top three people in that heat," Eaton said. "If I come top three in the trails, I'll get to go to London and represent USA in the 110-meter hurdles."
Currently receiving mention for the 2012 Bowerman Watch List, Eaton is fifth in the nation and tops in the BIG EAST in the 110-meter hurdles this season.
"This is a huge meet for Jarret," head coach Chris Fox said. "He was the indoor national champion, so he has a target on his back. He's also getting ready for the Olympic Trials, and he'll probably turn pro some time after this meet is over, so a lot is going to happen for Jarret between now and June 20. He's the equivalent of a No. 1 draft choice."
Eaton will run in the national semifinal on Thursday at 7:50 p.m., with the top-two in each heat plus the next fastest two times advancing to the championship heat on Saturday at 1:07 p.m. ESPN3.com will broadcast the national championship on June 7-9, while ESPNU will air live coverage on June 9 beginning at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
"Everybody's going to be watching Jarret," Fox said. "I'm sure with the television coverage he'll be a focal point, too. With Jarret, he's the big guy on the national scene right now. He has a chance to win this National too, and I know that's a big goal for him."
