BARCELONA, Spain - Just weeks before reporting to campus for preseason camp, incoming cross country and track and field freshman Brianna Nerud capped off an already impressive high school career by breaking the national high school record in the women's steeplechase. Nerud is competing for Team USA at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain and ran a time of 10:00.72 to write her name in both the national high school and American junior record books.
"I'm happy. I didn't realize I was so close to breaking ten (minutes)," commented Nerud. "I'm really happy. It was a tough race. Everyone was really going for it. Even if I missed the medals, I ran as fast as I could, and I got a PR. It started a little slow, then I picked up the pace and then they took it, and I tried to hang on to them and do whatever I could. In the last two laps, I knew I had a little more left and I tried to pick off those last two girls (for a medal)."
This is Nerud's second record-breaking performance of the meet. On July 10th, the North Shore, N.Y., native ran a time of 10:08.15 to set a new national high school record. A few days later, Nerud broke her own record in the steeplechase event, with her time of 10:00.72. She finished fifth overall in the event.
Nerud was also a 2011 IAAF World Youth qualifier, and is the second fastest 2k Steeple high school athlete with a time of 6:29.56. She holds the New York state record in the 5000-meter run at 16:43.56. She is a two-time NXN qualifier and State runner-up in both the Indoor 1500m and Outdoor 2k Steeple. Her personal record for the mile is 4:45.29.
