SYRACUSE, N.Y. - For senior defensive tackle Deon Goggins, giving back to the community is always a top-priority among his student-athlete responsibilities. In recognition for his dedication to helping others, Goggins has been named one of 117 nominees for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. The award honors college football players for their off-the-field dedication to making a difference in their communities.
Goggins' resume includes various activities of mentoring community youth and befriending senior citizens in many different settings. During the 2011 and 2010 summers, the Los Angeles, Calif. native was a Youth Impact Program counselor and mentor. Since January 2011, Goggins has volunteered with the Syracuse University Photography and Literacy Project, where he assists Syracuse area high school students in developing their reading and writing.
Goggins has been involved in local area schools, visiting them during Black History Month to read to students, serving as a facilitator for a leadership program, and participating as a mentor and big brother in the 'Building Men' program. When the defensive tackle returns home, Goggins stays involved with his high school, helping to training young high school athletes and volunteering at Ms. Bonnie's House of Love Day Care Center.
In 2011, Goggins was one of 11 Syracuse players to start all 12 games. He recorded 43 tackles, including 7.5 for a loss of yards and 1.5 sacks, and forced one fumble.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is chosen by a special voting panel that consists of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members. The team is comprised of 22 award recipients that will be announced in September. The award is not based on on-the-field accolades and only takes in consideration the type of community service work that the players dedicate their time to. Each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining a strong academic standing to meet the criteria for being named to the team.
Former SU members of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team include Matt Tarullo (2004), Graham Manley (2003) and Kyle Johnson (2000).
The Orange open up the 2012 season with its home opener in the Carrier Dome against Northwestern on Sept. 1st. Tickets are available online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
