SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Former Syracuse defensive end, Chandler Jones, was recognized with the Colonel Earl (Red) Blaik 2011 Leadership Award. The accolade is sponsored by the All-American Football Foundation and honors 11 top college football players.
Jones was selected 21st overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, chosen by the New England Patriots. He was the first Syracuse player to be chosen in the first round since defensive end Dwight Freeney was the 11th overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2002.
The 2011 All-BIG EAST First Team defensive end started all seven games he played, recording 38 tackles, including 4.5 sacks in his final season at SU. Jones earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors against West Virginia after recording six solo tackles, including two sacks for a loss of 19 yards. Also during the 2011 season, Jones notched four solo tackles, including two for a total loss of four yards, and his first career interception, which he returned 32 yards at Pittsburgh.
Chandler will join former SU players Will Allen, Tony Flammetta and Steve Gregory when the New England Patriots report for preseason camp on July 25th at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.
