SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Beginning in 1979, the Syracuse football team has had the unique opportunity to play 'home' games at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. That tradition will continue when Syracuse hosts USC in the N.Y. College Classic in MetLife Stadium on September 8th. The Orange posted a record of 5-3 at Giants Stadium, which closed in 2010. Three of those victories came against BIG EAST opponent Rutgers. Syracuse beat Rutgers in 1982 (31-8), again in 1991 (21-7), and in 1993 (31-18).
SU played its first game at Giants Stadium in 1979. Due to the construction of the Carrier Dome that season, the Orange played all of its home games at neutral sites. Two games took place at the Giants Stadium that year. The Orange beat West Virginia, 24-14, and a lost to Penn State, 35-7.
The N.Y. College Classic will not be the first meeting between the SU and the Trojans in the Meadowlands. In 1990, USC and Syracuse met at Giants Stadium for the Kickoff Classic. The Trojans won the contest, 34-16. The Orange participated in the Kickoff Classic again in 1997, this time blanking Wisconsin, 34-0.
Most recently the Orange lost, 13-7, to Georgia Tech in the 2001 Kickoff Classic.
Prior to the N.Y. College Classic, the Orange open up its 2012 season in the Carrier Dome against Northwestern on Sept. 1st. Tickets are available online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
