Update: Orange in Preseason NFL Camps

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- NFL training camps are in full swing this week, with all 32 teams beginning their preseason preparations. Six teams that feature former Syracuse football players have already opened up camp in the beginning of this week. The remaining nine teams that have Orange on their roster return to the playing field to prepare for the 2012 season.
The Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins and the 2012 Super Bowl Champions, the New York Giants, all begin camp today.
Detroit Lions
The Lions feature former linebacker Doug Hogue (2007-10). Hogue saw action primarily on special teams in 13 games this past season after being drafted by Detroit in the fifth round (157th overall) in the 2011 NFL Draft. While playing for the Orange, Hogue was named an All-BIG EAST First Team selection as a senior and was picked to participate in the 2011 East-West Shrine All-Star game. He finished his career at SU totaling 167 tackles (108 solo) and 12.5 sacks.
Kansas City Chiefs
Former wide receiver Aaron Weaver (2010) will report to Missouri Western State University with the Kansas City Chiefs in St. Joseph, Mo. Weaver, who transferred to SU for his senior year after Hofstra eliminated its intercollegiate football program, signed as a free agent with the Chiefs on May 22nd.
Miami Dolphins
Syracuse's former team captain and cornerback, Kevyn Scott (2008-11), will join the Miami Dolphin's training camp in Davie, Fla. The Tamarac, Fla. native was a 2011 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American and notched a total of 87 tackles (66 solo) in his 41 games in the Orange. Scott signed with the Dolphins as a free agent on May 4th.
New York Giants
Coming off their second Super Bowl Championship in four years, head coach Tom Coughlin and the New York Giants report to the University at Albany to open up preseason camp. Coughlin (1965-67) was a three-year letterman at Syracuse and broke SU's single-season pass receiving as a senior with 26 catches for 257 yards. His coaching career began at Syracuse when he was a graduate assistant in 1969. From 1974-76, Coughlin served as Syracuse's quarterbacks coach. He was promoted by SU to offensive coordinator in 1977, acting in the position until 1980.
Friday, July 27th
Carolina Panthers
Olindo Mare (1994-97) enters his 17th season in the NFL as the Panther's place kicker. Last season he made 22-of-28 field goal attempts (long of 45 yards) and went 44-of-45 extra point attempts during the regular season.
Houston Texans
Former SU linebacker Derrell Smith (2007-10) begins training camp at the Methodist Training Center in Houston with the Texans. Smith agreed to terms with the Texans in January. While playing for the Orange, Smith averaged 8.7 tackles per game his senior year and also averaged 1.06 tackles for loss per game.
Tennessee Titans
Offensive guard Ryan Durand (2005-08) agreed to terms with the Titans in January and reports to Baptist Sports Park on Friday for training camp. While at SU, Durand started in every contest starting in his sophomore season and was invited to play in the East-West Shrine Game in 2008.
Saturday, July 28th
Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts feature two former standout Syracuse football players. Both running back Delone Carter (2006-10) and All-American defensive end, Dwight Freeney (1998-01) report to Anderson University in Anderson, Ind. for Colts training camp. In his rookie season, Carter saw action in all 16 games and was third on the team with 377 rushing yards (101 carries) and two touchdowns. Carter was chosen in the fourth round (119th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft after an impressive career at SU where his 3,104 career rushing yards rank third on the Orange career rushing list. In 2011, Freeney was named to his seventh career Pro Bowl after recording 8.5 sacks and two forced fumbles during the season.
St. Louis Rams
After signing as a free agent with the Rams on May 8th, offensive tackle Michael Hay (2010-11) will join former offensive tackle Quinn Ojinnaka (2004-05) at the ContinuityX Training Center in Earth City, Mo. Hay was a starter for both his junior and senior seasons at SU, blocking for a 1,000-yard rusher in back-to-back seasons. Ojinnaka recently signed with the Rams as an unrestricted free agent in March after playing in nine games with the Colts in the 2011 season.
Syracuse reports for preseason camp on August 4th and kick off the 2012 season with its home opener in the Carrier Dome against Northwestern on Sept. 1st. Tickets are available online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
