The sound of a bugle followed by roll call will replace the alarm clock and breakfast check for the Syracuse University football team during one week of preseason camp. Thanks to the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, the Orange will incorporate the elements of military training into the daily preseason camp schedule.
"We appreciate the opportunity to incorporate the unique leadership and team building exercises into our program," said head coach Doug Marrone. "Our philosophy is to develop the person and then the athlete. This environment will greatly aid in the growth of our young men and further our valuable relationship with Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division."
The Orange will travel to Fort Drum on Sunday, August 12 to conduct its preseason camp, practicing on Sligh Field, holding meetings in an Army Battalion Headquarters, eat in an Army Dining Facility and sleep in actual Soldier barracks. In addition to their football development, student-athletes and coaches will participate in various military activities, including Army Physical Training and small unit leadership seminars. The week will culminate with a scrimmage played before the 10th Mountain Division Soldiers and their Families on Saturday, August 18.
"The Syracuse Orange Football Team coming to Fort Drum is another great example of the strong relationship between the New York communities and the 10th Mountain Division," said Maj. Gen. Mark A. Milley, 10th Mountain Division Commander. "This preseason camp will serve to strengthen the bond between us and the members of this great area."
Fort Drum features 30 range facilities, 17 major training areas, two active drop zones on nearly 107,000 acres of land, for a population of just more than 19,000 active military personnel.
The preseason training camp in Fort Drum is an extension of the unique partnership between the Orange in Syracuse and the Soldiers of the 10th. The Orange football and men's basketball teams have each had special encounters with Fort Drum's 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. The Soldiers have visited Orange practices and attended games in the Carrier Dome, while Syracuse student-athletes from both programs have visited Fort Drum and learned about what the troops do to prepare to meet their mission requirements.
In the fall of 2011, a representative of the military unit requested that the athletics department send a football and basketball to the troops stationed in Afghanistan. In turn, the Soldiers travelled with the items and had them autographed by men and women deployed in the area. The SU football and basketball were returned to their respective teams for display.
