Meet The Orange Olympians
After a highly succesful Olympic run, the former and current Syracuse stars are saying their goodbyes to London and preparing for the journey back to the United States. They won't be coming home empty handed though, as former men's basketball star Carmelo Anthony, returns with a gold medal and former rower, Natalie Mastracci returns with a silver medal. Melo and Team USA earn second consecutive Olympic gold medal

Team USA claimed their second consecutive gold medal last night in a thrilling 107-100 victory over Spain. Clinging to a one-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter, the US prevailed over Spain with a total team effort, led by Kevin Durant, who finished with a team-high 30 points. Durant's performance helped lead the US to the win and set the U.S. Olympic single-game record for 3-pointers attempted, as he netted 5-of-13 from the 3-point line. LeBron James also aided in the effort, adding four assists, seven rebounds and 19 total points.
After defeating the same team from the 2008 Beijing gold medal game, Team USA celebrated with cheers, hugs and a parade around the court with United States flags wrapped around their backs.

Team USA advances to quarterfinals after dominating Argentina

Team USA will head to the quarterfinals after shutting down Argentina 126-97 in the final game of preliminary round play. Entering the contest with a 77-2 record in Olympic pool play, Team USA was favored to win at the start,
but got off a sloppy start in the first half, leading 34-32 at the end of the first quarter after Kevin Durant nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer. While Team USA still only led 60-59 at halftime, the US managed to turn up the heat in the second half.
LeBron James and Durant both dominated the third quarter as James sunk 9 points early on and Durant totaled 17 of 28 total points in the third quarter as well. As Team USA pulled away, Argentina couldn't keep up with the momentum and were unable to pull off an Olympic upset.
The United States will begin quarterfinal play against Australia on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 5:15 p.m. Eastern.

USA field hockey knocked out of medal contention

Shannon Taylor and the USA field hockey team suffered two losses, eliminating its chances to make it to the semifinal round of Olympic play. New Zealand recorded a 3-2 victory over the US on Saturday, Aug. 4th. New Zealand struck quickly, scoring its first tally only 70 seconds after the start of the match. USA's Katie Bell tied up the match 17 minutes later, before NZ took the lead again off of a penalty corner opportunity.
Claire Laubach netted the second equalizer of the game for Team USA, tying up the match at 2-2 heading into halftime. New Zealand was able to score the game-winner in the second half, ending USA's chance of advancing to the semi-final round.
On Monday, Aug. 6th, team USA was blanked 7-0 by South Africa, finishing in 6th place in Group B. The U.S. will play in their final Olympic match on Friday, August 10 for an eleventh place finish.

Osazuwa competes for Nigeria in heptathlon

Former track and field athlete Uhunoma Osazuwa competed in the heptathlon event representing Nigeria. Stretching over two days, Osazuwa competed in five of the seven events.
During the first event of the competition, Osazuwa took 7th in her heat with a time of 13.46 in the 100m hurdles. This finish gave her 1056 points. Next up was the high jump in which she took 20th place in her group with a mark of 1.77, awarding her 941 points. During the shot put, Osazuwa threw 12.77m, giving her an 11th place finish in her group and 712 points. The last event of Friday was the 200m, where she took 8th in her heat with a time of 24.62, leading to 922 points.
On Saturday, Osazuwa competed in the long jump, recording a 15th place finish with a mark of 5.74. This mark awarded her 771 points. Osazuwa was a DNS for the Javelin throw and the 800m.

Melo Leads Team USA in record breaking win over Nigeria

Carmelo Anthony lit up the court last night during the 156-73 record-setting victory over Nigeria. In less than three quarters, Melo scored 37 points, going 10-of-12 on 3-point attempts and shattering the U.S. single-game soring record.
The U.S. opened the attack on a 13-0 run, shooting 11-of-14 from behind the arc in the first quarter, led by Anthony, who scored four and Kevin Durant, who added three more. By the end of the game, Team USA racked up a few more records, including most points in a game(156), three-pointers (26), and field-goal percentage (71). Team USA also tallied 41 assists, which tied another U.S. Olympic record as well.
Team USA has two games remaining in preliminary round play, as they prepare to play Lithuania on Saturday, Aug. 4 at 2:30 p.m. (5:15 p.m. Eastern) and Argentina on Monday, Aug. 6 at 10:15 p.m. (5:15 p.m Eastern).

Mastracci rows Canada to silver medal

Former SU rower Natalie Mastracci became the first Orange to medal in these Olympic Games as she helped lead the Canada women's eight to a silver medal at Eton Dorney on Thursday. The Canadians finished just 1.47 seconds behind the gold medal-winning USA boat and were closing the gap in the final sprint. The Netherlands finished third. It is Canada's seventh medal of the London Games.
Mastracci told Niagara This Week:
"I've been wearing the medal around my neck for a few hours now. I'm getting a pretty sore neck. (But) it's a good feeling of pain, just like the race."
The Thorold, Ontario native and Syracuse rower from 2007-10 made it three straight Olympics in which a SU women's rower has medaled.

USA field hockey shut out by Australia

The USA field hockey team fell to 1-2 in group B play this morning when they were blanked by Australia, 1-0. The squad couldn't carry over their momentum after Tuesday's thrilling 1-0 victory over Argentina, allowing a goal to be scored in the final minutes of the first half off a corner play. Anna Flanagan had the tally that gave team Australia their second victory over the US.
Next up for Team USA is its match against New Zealand on Saturday, Aug. 4th. The game will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network at 2:00 p.m. New Zealand currently has two wins in the tournament and will face Argentina this evening at 9:15 p.m for their third Olympic match.

Taylor plays the hero in USA's upset of Argentina

Syracuse alum Shannon Taylor scored the game's only goal late in the first half to lead USA Field Hockey to a huge 1-0 win vs. Argentina on Tuesday. The win improves the Americans to 1-1 and puts them in a tie for second place in Group B. Taylor and Team USA return to action on Thursday against Australia in a 5:45 a.m. ET start.
Though the world rankings would imply it was a big upset - The USA is ranked No. 10, Argentina is ranked No. 2) - the Americans split an exhibition series in June with the Argentines, 1-1-2, and beat them in the 2011 Pan American Games final, a game in which Taylor scored a key goal as well.

Team USA put on a show at the Olympic Park Basketball Arena Tuesday night, crushing Tunisia in a 110-63 victory. Leading by just 13 points at the half, the US quickly improved, turning the game into to a 47-point blowout by the sound of the final buzzer.
Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Love scored 16 points apiece, while Kevin Durant added another 13 points to lead Team USA to the win. Anthony also nailed all six field goal attempts, tallying two three point shots and sinking a pair of free throws from the line.
The US will continue preliminary round play on Thursday, Aug. 2, taking on Nigeria at 5:15 p.m. Eastern. The game will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network and online at NBCOlympics.com.

Former Syracuse stars will be in Olympic action on Tuesday afternoon, and both games will be televised live!
Shannon Taylor and the USA field hockey team play No. 2 ranked in the world Argentina at 2 p.m. ET on MSNBC (Time Warner 38/836 in Central N.Y.). The game is between familiar foes, as the Americans and Argentines played a four-game exhibition series in Virginia in June, splitting the games 1-1-2. Last November, Team USA, then ranked No. 13 in the world, upset then-No. 1 ranked Argentina, 4-2, in the Pan American Games.

Team USA could not complete a two-goal comeback against Germany, falling 2-1 in its first Olympic match. Germany came out firing in the first half, scoring both of its goals in the first 21 minutes of play. Both Germany's Fanny Rinne and Lisa Hahn were able to capitalize on scoring chances against the United States. The U.S. used half time to regroup and was rewarded with four penalty corners. Captain Lauren Crandall found the back of the cage with her shot on the third corner opportunity to put her team in contention. The U.S. was unable to tie up the match, suffering its first loss in the preliminary round in Group B. Shannon Taylor tallied one shot in the game.
Team USA faces Argentina tomorrow, July, 31st. The game will be broadcast on MSNBC at 2:00pm ET.

Team USA rolled past France in the Olympic game opener, playing before a sold-out crowd of 8,989 at the Olympic Park Basketball Arena. Despite leading just 22-21 at the end of the first quarter, Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul took control of the US lead, sinking a trio of three-pointers at the start of the second quarter. Continuing the momentum, Team USA extended their lead to 27 points before finishing off the French in a 98-71 final decision.
Team USA and Melo will continue preliminary round play against Tunisia on Tuesday, July 31 at 5:15 p.m. Eastern.

Mastracci's Canada W8+ advances to finals with top time

It was bright and early in North America on Sunday morning when the Canada women's eight took the water across the pond on Eton Dorney for its opening heat of the Games. Natalie Mastracci, rowing in the five seat - part of the "engine room" for the W8+ - helped lead the Canadians to a first-place finish in the heat in a time of 6:13.91, well ahead of Romania (6:16.61) and the Netherlands (6:18.98). It was also the top overall heat time, edging the Americans, who won the other heat in 6:14.68.
Mastracci and Canada advance automatically to the finals on Thursday, Aug. 2 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern.

Orange begin action on Sunday

Four former Syracuse student-athletes, including men's basketball head coach Jim Boeheim, will begin action at the London Olympics on Sunday.
Rower Natalie Mastracci and the Canada women's eight will be in action at 6:50 a.m. ET with an opening heat at the Eton Dorney rowing facility outside London.
Three-time Olympian Carmelo Anthony and second-time Team USA assistant coach Jim Boeheim will begin action on Sunday with the USA men's basketball team playing France in Pool A action at 9:30 a.m. ET. The game will be televised live on NBC Sports Network.
After the morning action of former SU stars, Shannon Taylor and the USA field hockey team play Germany in Group B action at 4:15 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live on NBC Sports Network.
