More than 1,000 fans gathered for the annual Orange FanFest to watch the Syracuse football team complete its first practice in full pads. The team participated in full contact drills for the first time this preseason as it continue to prepare for their week at Fort Drum. It was also the first time this season that the team practiced inside the Carrier Dome.
"Credit to the fans for showing up for Fanfest," said head coach Doug Marrone. "They were in tune. They were enthusiastic. It was great for our players. They get excited from that. We practiced hard, but obviously there's a lot of work to do. Today was our first practice in pads."
The practice included two scrimmage periods with full contact situations.
"I think its a little tougher transition the first time you put pads on," Marrone said. "We're just concentrating on the progress. We have a tough day tomorrow, a practice on Sunday and then we pack and get up to Fort Drum. That week is going to be very tough. The telling tale is probably after that week to see how we are."
The team will check in at the Fort Drum's 10th Mountain Division facility on Sunday afternoon and organize the barracks. On Monday, part of the team will participate in PT while the rest will take part in small unit leadership activities. Practice will be held in the late afternoon and will be followed by leadership sessions taught by 2-87 soldiers.
"I think it will be very important for our kids to get up there and totally focus on football in a different environment with a little adversity with what we're doing with the military," Marrone said. "I think that part is probably unique. We're going to change a little bit of our training. We're going to do some more training with the military. We're going to do some competitive situations with them. Even us coaches will be involved with it."
The Orange open up the 2012 season at home at the Carrier Dome on Sept. 1st against Northwestern (12 p.m., ESPN2). Season and individual game tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX. Tickets and travel packages for New York's College Classic against USC at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 8th are available at www.nycollegeclassic.com.
