After being woken up by an army wake up with Drill Sergeants coming through the barracks, participating in small unit leadership activates and PT, which included pulling a Humvee, it was time for SU to take to the practice field this afternoon. While the week at Fort Drum is an incredible learning experience for all involved, it has an extra special meaning for senior offensive tackle Justin Pugh.
"I've always backed the armed forces," Pugh said. "My brother's actually in the air force and he's been in it for the last 11 years. He's never really gotten to see me play organized football at any major level like Syracuse. This definitely has a place in my heart because I really don't know what he goes through and he doesn't know what I go through. Coming here and seeing what he goes through, I mean gets obviously the army and the air force are a little different, but they all are part of the armed forces so its definitely a cool thing."
The team received an inspirational message from Commanding General Mark A. Milley prior to practice. General Milley discussed the importance of working together as a team and reinforced an emphasis on leadership.
"We are showing them some of the conditioning we do in the army," General Milley said. "We are going to give them an army physical fitness test. None of them should have any difficulty with that. We also here in the army over the past few years, have gone through something called functional fitness. Functional fitness for the army are tailored specifically to those physical activities expected in common operations like climbing a wall, climbing a rope, going over obstacles, etc. It's very demanding and it gets the heart rate up very high and it's very, very difficult stuff. They'll go through some of that a little later."
Tomorrow the team will hold two sessions of practice at Fort Drum.
"This experience has enabled our players to focus at the task at hand and to really, truly focus on football and not have a lot of distractions," head coach Doug Marrone said. "We've always felt fortunate having our military representing us and giving us that ability of freedom. From our player's perspective, we are learning and have a great appreciation for what they are going through or what they have gone through as well as having the ability to come out on this football field, surround ourselves with them and hopefully give them some type of enjoyment in their off time.
