Syracuse wide receivers coach Rob Moore and running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley not only share a common past of playing in the NFL, they also shared a home stadium. While Moore, who played for the New York Jets, and Wheatley, who was on the New York Giants, were on opposing teams, they shared a common home field at the Meadowland region. The duo will return back to their old playing field when Syracuse football hosts USC at MetLife Stadium in New York's College Classic on Sept. 8th. "I have a lot of fond memories there," Moore said. "Of course I didn't play in the new stadium. I think the great thing is, is that we have a lot of support in that area. A lot of people live in Manhattan, Long Island, and New Jersey that are Syracuse grads. I think it's going to be a great venue for our players to play in and I look forward to having an exciting crowd."
This time Moore returns back to the Meadowlands region as a coach at his alma mater. The current wide receivers coach was selected first overall in the 1990 NFL supplemental draft and began his 12-year NFL playing career at the New York Jets (1990-95). Moore was selected to the NFL All-Rookie team after his first season at the Jets.
"Anytime you go to a pro stadium and you've played at that level, and you played in New York, you understand that commitment that those fans have to those teams," Moore said. "I'm probably going to compare it to the old stadium and see what I like and what I don't like."
Moore was the starting wide receiver at SU from 1986-90 and was the first player in Syracuse history to surpass a 1,000 yards receiving in a single season.
While Moore represented New York in the Green and White, Wheatley was in the Blue and Red on the New York Giants. Wheatley was selected as the 17th overall pick in the 1995 draft and began his 10-year NFL career at the New York Giants (1995-98). Wheatley had a storied career in college playing for the University of Michigan (1991-94). He was the starting running back and kick returner and was named the Big Ten Player of the Year for 1992.
"I think without question the experience gives our player the opportunity to get a feel of what it's like to play at that professional level," Moore said. "It also gives us an opportunity to play on a big stage. It's going to be a nationally televised game and to play against a storied opponent like USC, it's going to be an unbelievable challenge for us."
The Orange open up the 2012 season at home at the Carrier Dome on Sept. 1st against Northwestern (12 p.m., ESPN2). Season and individual game tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
