Excitement continues at Fort Drum as Syracuse football's week of preseason camp continues. The Orange continue to partake in activities with the military along with completing practice. Today SU and the 10th Mountain Division worked together in an SU Football Bootcamp which included both the team and the Army.
"One of the things that you find out about leadership is that it's a word that a lot of people use in a lot of different professions," said head coach Doug Marrone. "The first thing you have to do to become a good leader is that you have to become a good follower. We have a lot of good things that are going on with the military. Our kids are listening and going."
One of the highlights of the week at Fort Drum will take place tomorrow with the football team playing paintball on the Army post. The coaches may even make an appearance on a paintball team of their own.
"I was involved with paintball in New Orleans," Marrone said. "I believe there is a really good chance we will do something like that and participate with the players."
The week of preseason camp on the Army post concludes with the Ernie Davis scrimmage in which the team will scrimmage against each other in front of the 10th Mountain Division and their families.
"Saturday's going to be a big scrimmage," Marrone said. "We're excited about. Saturday we are going to get after it. We are going to play football and we're going to go. We have the barbeque afterwards. We are expecting a great turnout."
A unique aspect of the week at camp that Marrone has pointed out is that many of the student-athletes are having the chance to interact with soldiers that are their own age.
"They've had jobs before and felt strongly about what the military is and what it means and what it means to be a member of the military for our country," Marrone said. "I'm not talking about people that are my age. I'm talking about kids that are the same age as our players. When you think about it and take a step back, it's just truly amazing."
The Orange open up the 2012 season at home at the Carrier Dome on Sept. 1st against Northwestern (12 p.m., ESPN2). Season and individual game tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX. Tickets and travel packages for New York's College Classic against USC at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 8th are available at www.nycollegeclassic.com.
