The stage was set at Fort Drum. It was the Destroyers against the Comanche team in the Syracuse football paintball championship game. In a dominating fashion, the Destroyers, who were comprised of the coaching staff and the linebackers, won the paintball tournament led by none other than game MVP, running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley.
"The winners won by a landslide and that was the Destroyers," Lieutenant Greg Durso said.
Wheatley, who came dressed in camouflage gear and ready to play, received a Rangers badge from Lieutenant Durso, for his efforts on the battle field. The SU football team was split in to four separate units with 30 players a piece, all named after the 2nd Battalion 87th Infantry companies: Apache, Blackhawks, Comanche, and the ultimate champions the Destroyers.
"All of the players on the other team wanted to aim at the coaches so we protected them behind the barrier," sophomore linebacker Dyshawn Davis said about his team's winning strategy.
The tournament began with a round robin setup with every team getting the opportunity to play each other once. A 10th Mountain Division football was used as the flag for the capture the flag portion of the game. After the round robin was completed, the Destroyers sat atop of the leader board in first place. For the championship and consolation matches, the rules changed a bit. Instead of playing capture the flag, the winner was chosen by whoever had more players still standing on the field when the horn blew after 10 minutes of play.
"I think we saw a mix of strategies," Lieutenant Durso said. "The Comanche team would bum rush the flag and just try to win fast. They wound up having more casualties. We saw some better strategies towards the end."
Through the paintball experience, it was evident how much SU has learned this week from interacting and participating in events with the Army. Teamwork, communication, and strategy were all exemplified in the paintball games. The Orange will wrap up its preseason week at Fort Drum tomorrow in front of members of the 10th Mountain Division and their families during its annual Ernie Davis scrimmage.
The Orange open up the 2012 season at home at the Carrier Dome on Sept. 1st against Northwestern (12 p.m., ESPN2). Season and individual game tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX. Tickets and travel packages for New York's College Classic against USC at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 8th are available at www.nycollegeclassic.com.
