In front of over 1,000 members of the Army and their families, the Syracuse football team wrapped up its week of preseason camp at Fort Drum with its annual Ernie Davis scrimmage. The scrimmage gave fans an inside look at the team's progress during camp and what else it learned by interacting with the military for the past week.
"When the General came up and spoke to our team in the beginning, he talked about a sense of community as far as the Army," head coach Doug Marrone said. "He talked to us about the players having an appreciation for what the military does for us with both men and women. I know walking away from here, the military will be in our thoughts daily with what they do for our country."
The Ernie Davis scrimmage consisted of the teams running special team plays, kickoff returns and offense versus defense plays. Following the scrimmage, head coach Doug Marrone presented members of the 10th Mountain Division autographed SU football helmets that were signed by the student-athletes.
"It's important for us as an Army to keep connected to the people of America," Major General Mark A. Milley said. "For the North Country, here in New York, Syracuse football represents a good chunk of the North Country. It's important to keep us connected. It keeps the people and the people's Army together as one as we go forward. Coach Marrone, we appreciate it. I know you guys got a lot out of it as well."
Once the scrimmage wrapped up, the team had the chance to get to know the soldiers and their families that they worked with all week at a barbeque.
"We thought when we came up here that we had a great appreciation for what the military does for us with giving us the freedom to do what we can do every single day," Marrone said. "I think we are leaving here with a greater appreciation of what goes on with the military. We have a great deal of respect for the discipline of the military. We have to practice that. Just like the general said, as we're getting ready to go with football, our thoughts and prayers will be with the men and women of the military daily."
The team will complete one final practice at Fort Drum tomorrow before heading back to Syracuse to continue preseason camp.
In two weeks, the Orange open up the 2012 season at home at the Carrier Dome on Sept. 1st against Northwestern (12 p.m., ESPN2). Season and individual game tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
