Five days and counting: Syracuse football's opening game against Northwestern is almost here. With classes beginning today, many of the student-athletes can feel the excitement of the beginning of the 2012 season and are looking forward to hosting NU at the Carrier Dome on Saturday, Sept. 1 at noon (ESPN2). Saturday's game will also be an Orange Out so SU fans are encouraged to wear their orange gear in support of the team.
"It feels great," said junior linebacker Marquis Spruill. "Camp was a grueling process like it always is. It's gotten us ready thus far. We've been working really hard at this Northwestern game. The first game out is always the biggest game. Once you reach that point in camp, like I can't wait for the first game. I think we have all reached that point. We are all ready to play."
This is the third meeting in the last five seasons between the Orange and the Wildcats. The most recent time that SU hosted the Big Ten team in Carrier Dome was on Sept. 20, 2009 when the Orange won, 37-34.
"As far as we know, we just have to be well conditioned and disciplined," Spruill said. "We have to get back on the ball as quick as we can because they are ready to snap the ball by the time we can blink. We have to get back, be disciplined and we'll be just fine."
Along with the freshmen and transfer student-athletes, two members of the coaching staff will experience their first SU football game on Saturday. Both linebackers coach Steve Morrison and defensive coach Donnie Henderson joined the Orange at the beginning of the 2012 calendar.
"Morrison, he's a very smart guy," Spruill said. "He knows offense and defense in and out. He wants us to do the same. He is teaching us more precise things. He gets into the very minute details of everything to make sure you know almost everything about our offense during camp and now Northwestern. We have done a lot of game plans down that. He gives us keys to everything. He does the breakdowns of how many plays they run when they run them and what plays they run on a certain formation. He's a great guy."
Season and individual game tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX for SU's first game against Northwestern. More information on how to get $10 tickets to the Northwestern game through the New York State Fair deal can be found here.
