Opening the Season
Syracuse is 78-40-4 all-time in season openers with a 66-14-4 record at home. Head coach Doug Marrone is 2-1 in season opening games. This is the ninth time overall that SU has opened up its season with a Big Ten opponent. The Orange are 1-6-1 when opening the season against a Big Ten opponent, recording its only win over Wisconsin in 1997, 34-0.
Syracuse vs. Northwestern
SU holds a 5-4 advantage in the series against Northwestern. The Orange are 3-0 against the Wildcats at the Carrier Dome, including its most recent victory in 2009. SU edged NU 37-34 in that game after Ryan Lichtenstein made a 41-yard game-winning field goal as time expired. The 2009 victory over the Wildcats was Coach Marrone's first win as the head coach of the Orange. The Orange are 11-5 against nonconference opponents under Marrone.
Scoring Average Climbs
In the past three seasons, SU's scoring average has been over 20 points under the direction of Marrone. Last season the Orange averaged 24.2 points per game which was the most for SU since 2003 (26.7 ppg.) The average improved greatly for SU averaged between 13.8 and 18.1 points per game from 2005-08.
Will the Streak Continue?
Beginning in 2008, the running backs each season has set a high standard, rushing for over 1,000 yards in a season. Curtis Brinkley ran for 1,164 yards in 2008. In 2009, Delone Carter followed in his footsteps recording consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in 2009 (1,021 yards) and 2010 (1,233). Last season, Antwon Bailey completed a 1,051 yard season.
There are several backs in the mix for carries including Jerome Smith, Prine-Tyson Gulley, Ashton Broyld, Adonis Ameen-Moore, George Morris III and Devante McFarlane.
Nassib is Back For Third Year as SU's Starting Quarterback
Senior quarterback Ryan Nassib has started all 25 games the past two seasons as he heads into his third season as the starter. Nassib continues to make his mark in the SU record book after setting team records for completions (259), attempts (415), yards (2,685), and matched the record for passing touchdowns (22) last season. He has also been to tally seven wins when either the Orange were tied or training in the fourth quarter.
Nassib has been named on of 29 candidates for the 2012 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The accolade is presented to the nation's top senior quarterback and Nassib is one of two BIG EAST quarterbacks on the list. Nassib has also been named to the 2012 Senior Bowl Watch list.
Defense has Experience
Syracuse returns eight starters on defense, including six of its top seven tacklers. The linebacker corps of Dan Vaughan, Marquis Spruill and Dyshawn Davis are back as well as Siriki Diabate who will take over the middle linebacker position. Interior linemen Deon Goggins and Jay Bromley are both back on the defensive side.
Strong safety Shamarko Thomas is back to lead the secondary with Jeremi Wilkes seeing time at free safety. The cornerback position returns both Ri'Shard Anderson and Keon Lyn, two starters from 2011. Brandon Reddish will see some time opposite of Anderson at corner back.
Tough Slate
Syracuse's schedule this season has been named the second-toughest nonconference schedule by Berry Tramel of The Oklahoman. Tramel ranked all 68 teams in the six power conferences. The Orange's non-conference schedule consists of five games, including four against opponents from BCS leagues. SU is the only team with games against four BCS opponents. Syracuse's nonconference schedule includes Northwestern, USC, Minnesota, Missouri, and Stony Brook.
New York's College Classic
The Orange will play Southern Cal in New York's College Classic at MetLife Stadium on September 8. Tickets and travel packages for the New York's College Classic are available at www.nycollegeclassic.com.
