SYRACUSE, NY – Two names familiar to Central New York basketball fans will be on hand when Syracuse hosts Monmouth on Saturday, December 8, at the Carrier Dome. Monmouth features second-year head coach King Rice, who was a McDonald's All-American at Binghamton High School. Rice's staff includes former Syracuse assistant Rick Callahan.
Syracuse is coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Orange won a school-record 34 games, were 34-3 overall, and won the BIG EAST Conference regular-season title with a 17-1 league record. Syracuse reached the NCAA Tournament's "Elite Eight," before losing to Ohio State.
Monmouth was 12-20 overall in Rice's initial season at the helm. The former North Carolina point guard accepted the head coaching post with the Hawks following a five-year stint as an assistant on Kevin Stallings' staff at Vanderbilt.
The pairing between Syracuse and Monmouth will be the first in program history.
